8. P. LINES CONSOLIDATED
Consolidation on February 1 of the
Southern 1'a-clflc lines north and
south of Ashland, under the Jurisdic
tion of Federal Manager W. R. Hcott
Is announced by the United States
railroad administration. This change
restore the organization of the rail
road's Pacific system an It existed
before federal control, and Is In pre
paration for the return to private
ownership on March 1. Since the
lines were taken over by the govern
ment, the portion north of Ashland
to Portland haH been operated by
Federal Manager J. P. O'Urien In the
northwestern region, and tho lines
south to Ogden and El Paso by Fed
eral Manager W. II. Scott In the cen
tral western region.
Federal Manager Scott announces
the appointment of H. A. Hinshaw as
assistant to the federal manager with
headquarters at Portland. Hinshow
was formerly general freight agent
at that point.
A farm which contains the oldest

ing to a farmer from North Dakota,

THE ONE-DISH DINNER
All housewives in these days of top
prices are anxious to extend the ex-!
pensive articles in the menu as far;
as possible. A delicious meat dish j
which is a money saver na well, is
California Tamalo Pie. Besides being
economical it is also time and labor
saving. It might easily be called o
.one-dish dinner, for it contains vege
tables and corn meal, which takes
the place of potatoes.
California Tamale Pie.
Three-quarter cup corn meal. 3 cups
boiling water. 1 teaspoon salt, 1 cup
ripe olives, 3 tablespoons tomato cat-
t'P. 4 pound choped beef, 1 small
onion, 1 tablespoon chopped green
chile pepper, 1 can tomato sauce.
Add the corn meal and salt to the
boiling water and boil 5 minutes, then
cook in a double boiler for 1 hour
and add the olives, stoned and chop
ped, and the catsup. Chop the onion,
add to the beef and cook in a hot
frying pan till the red color has en
tirely disappeared. Mix thoroughly
with the tomato sauce. Spread half
the corn meal In a greased baking
dish, put in the meat mixture and
spread the remainder of the corn
meal over the top. Hake 45 minutes.
With this u very simple salad mny
be served, preferably a green salad,
such as the recipe given belowr. This
is available nt all seasons, and com
bines particularly well with tho Tu
male pie.
SPINACH SALAD

tablespons lemon juice, teaspoon
salt, 1 Dill or sweet pickle, or 3 table
spoons relish, red pimiento, French
dressing.
Drain and chop the spinach. Chop
the pickle and onion, mix thoroughly
and add to spinach with lemon Juice
and salt. Chill the mixture thorough
ly and serve heaped on a lettuce leaf
Oarnish with strips of pimiento and
pour French dressing over it.
A suitable dessert to complete this
menu ' is Fruit Supreme, which,
though simple in preparation, is de
licious to the taste and most appeal
ing in appearance.
