LYNN W. MILLER. PUBLISHERS' STATEMENT. The undersigned desire to say to people of this community that we are here to stay: that we believe in the future of Springfield, and that we shall put forth our best efforts to further and promote the inter ests and welfare of our terri tory. While the political policy of The News will' be Republican, we shall not condemn the good that may come from the efforts of any other political adminis tration, nor shall we bear ill will toward men of other faith. If at times policies or issues that we might believe to be at fault, emanate from the Repub lican party, we shall not uphold them. We are emphatically in favor of everything that shall tend to make Springfied and Lane county a better, heathier and happier place in which to live, and we shall give unstinted ef forts and influence to any such matters brought forth. We want to help promote better social and educational conditions in this community and through out the state. We believe a closer community life and a spirit of cooperation will bring results that will be for the good of all: therefore we shall work toward those ends. We stand for honesty and for cuare and fair deals in all mat ters, both in political and busi ness life. NowTier-p elee have we met a mor cordial, kindly and sincere neople than in Springfield and the surrounding territory. We promise our hearty cooperation in the daily life and tasks of this community. SAM II. TYLER. II. B. FREELAND, We have just completed a street by street canvass for a dwelling house, being newcom ers here. It was found that rental property was very scarce at this time. We believe the We are HERE and are GLAD we came. And we believe you will be glad. We are ready to meet all competition. Bring the paper that has Eugene special prices in and we will meet them and save you the car fare. Come in and get acquainted. CASH AND CARRY GROCERY A. R. Gray, Prop. situation warrants the building of new houses and repairing of others that shall be for rent to the class of people that wish to make their home here for a time and do not wish to buy at first. Many are coming in at this season of the year, and conditions at present indicate a steady growth of Springfield and community. The November isue of the Pa cific Iegion has been received and we find that it is a real live, spicy issue, full of old time pep. Just as they say, "no pains or expense have been spared to make this Issue one to be proud of." It is full of articles and il lustrations on the business en terprises and the beauty and scenic wonders of the Pacific Northwest. The editors have done their full measure to help secure the 1920 convention of the American Legion for Seat tle. Although Cleveland has been chosen for the convention next year.- it is hoped by the westerners that theNl921 con vention may be secured for th west. A criticism of road conditions published in last week's News, under the caption "Isolating ; Eugene." should have been credited to the Eugene Regis ter, the credit line having been inadvertantly dropped in "mak i ing up" the paper. THE CENTRALIA TRAGEDY AND ITS LESSON. No palliation can be found for the dastardly crime of the I. W. W. in killing four and wounding three veterans of the great war at Centralia. The American Legion was celebrating victory in a war in which the United States had exerted its whole strength against an effort to subdue all free nations and de stroy free government, when a band 'of I. W. I), opened fire. The attack was plainly the re sult of a deliberate conspiracy by a band of .fanatics, inflamed by hatred of the American con stitution to destroy the govern ment ,by slaughter of its most valiant champions. Although the lynching of Smith cannot bo condoned, it can be explained. The people not the officers of the law, drove the murderers from their hiding place, captured them and took them to jail. The ma chinery of the law had broken down or there would have been no I. W. W. at large to commit the murders. For their own nrpRprvation the people of the city had been compelled to take again into their own hands the authority which their elected W. M. Green, Mgr. officers had neglected to exer cise. They had caught Smith redhanded. for he shot Hub bard in a final effort to escape. The Centralia tragedy should burn the fact into the minds of all persons entrusted with en forcement of the law that the 1. W. W. and all similar revolu tionary organizations are en gaged in war on the United States. Though they are scat tered throuiih our own country, many of them American citi zens and ostensibly pursuing iKMtce.ful vocations, they are as truly making war on us as were the (icrntans until a year ago.
