(Springfield High School) PERSONALS Crai Shahan la back to school af ter a week's absence. She has bad a severe attack .of tonsilitls. Mr. Roth's room baa recently been converted Into a modern gym. Already one window bas been broken. It will be replaced by a new one, for which the different ones using the room have liberally donated. Some of the Hallowe'en parties seemed to take great delight In de stroying public property, from the looks of the walks and tennis back stop at the HUgh school. We hope these parties did not consist of stu dents or alumni. There are a good many boys trying out for basketball. It looks like old S. II. 8. Is going to "play ball" this yoar. The basket-ball fever Is running higher every day at old S. II. 8.. Some thing must be done In a very short time or It Is liable to turn Into some thing worse than a mere fever. Owing to the absence of Miss Machen. the geometry class reported to Mr. Roth this morning. M(s Machen was compelled to leave school yesterday on account of sick- . - ncss. Hazel Brattaln was absent from school Tuesday. Quite a number of students have boon attending the trial of Martin Clark, accused of killing Charles Taylor. Olfe Sollem Is back In school after several days' absence. It sure seems good to see bis beaming countenance In general science class again. . Howard Cotton, once a member of 8. it S., was a visitor of the afternoon classes Tuesday. American Legion Takes Interest In High School May Not Hsve Holiday Despite the endeavors of the faculty to obtain at least a half-day holiday on "Annstlce Day", the 11th of Nov ember. It seems very doubtful whether we will be granted this holiday or not, so the boys and girls are each plan ning some entertainment for the after noon of that day. In case we should not be excused. W will be more or lees consoled, however. If we are not excused, by the fact that we will have a week's Vacation Thanksgiving, on account of the Teachers' Institute, which will be held during that week. High School Athletics The local post of the American Leg Ion has invited the boys of the stud ent body to be present at a meeting to be held Wednesday, Novejnberl2. In the Stevens hall, for the purposoe of discussing some means, for the erec tion of a place of amusement and place In which to play basket-ball for the boys. Ex-8tudents and Alumni visit S. H. S. We had several visitors at old S. H. 8. last week in the form of ex students and members of the alumni. Jerry Van Valzah. James Lewis and Odin Olson, graduates in '18 and '19, each spent an afternoon with us re calling their own toilsome but plea sant hours spent in our "Halls of Knowledge". Notice Is hereby given to the legal voters of School District No. 19 of Lane County, State of Oregon, that an election will be held in said Dis trict at High school on the 24th day of November. 1919, at 7:30 o'clock In the afternoon, to vote on the question of Increasing the amount of the tax levy In said district for the year 1919, by more than six per cent over the amount of such levy for the year Im mediately preceding. It is necessary to raise this addi tional amount by special levy for the following reasons: The addition to the school course of Manual Training and Home Econom ics. ALUMNI NEW8 The High school has bestowed upon us a place In the "Tattler", and though news is rather scarce, we are going to endeavor to keep that place filled each week. "The great and near great" of the alumni are so scat tered about the state that It will b? bard to keep in touch with all. but we will do our best We are looking to the High school student body this year to produce great results,, for we know you have the "stuff" and "pep" to make this year a great one in the history of Springfield high. The alumni are planning to hold a "hard-time" party in the Stevens hall. Friday, November 7. We wish to take this means of announcing It, and want all members of the alumni present and with regular '"hard-time" clothes on. JOKES A mouse found Its way Into the assembly Tuesday evening. The girls screamed, and the mouse died, but the girls screamed on until Mr. Roth drove the mouse and the boys outside. I see Joyce Mae has a black eye. Oh! you needn't wonder, for she had a quarrel with the indoor baseball and It hit her in the eye. Mr. Roth (In general science) "What would be the result if all the bacteria were taken from the air?" Pupil: "Bacteria makes things sour. I guess things would all be sweet." A school teacher recently asked one of her pupils to name four different kinds of sheep, and the bright little fellow showed that he was quite well posted In literature when he answered: "White sheep, black staeap, Mary's little lamb, and the hydraulic ram." Mrs. Flank is working. All the love Is gone from her book-keeping class. Ralph hasn't been here for a week. Miss Doris Smith and Mr. Milton Coffman find it very entertaining to look at Collier's, especially when they sit together. In History VII. before class took up. Harry Hughes came in and sat down on the seat that Is broken. The boys on the other end Jumped up and poor Harry's fet were more prominent than his head. You have a heart RED CROSS GIRLS FEED THOUSANDS OF DOUGHBOYS Since the armistice, twenty-five canteena, operated by Red Cross Chap ters In Idaho, Oregon, and Washing ton have dispensed 23,379 gallons of coffee, and 224.236 dozen sandwiches, to soldiers, sailors, and marines en route. The hospitality of these can teens was accepted nine hundred thou sand times, often by men who would have gone hungry but for the Red Cross service thus rendered. Figures show that these men, through the courtesy of the Red Cross, drank 8. 497 gallons of iced drinks; used 6.6G3 bars of soap, and 37,713 paper towels; ate 57.491 chocolate bars, 16.629 pounds of candy, 14,754 dozen cookies, 74,913 dozen doughnuts, .9,488 dozen hot rolls; wrote 436,400 post cards furnished and stamped by the Red Cross; and to their own discomfort during a certain period, wore 12.250 influenza masks. All this, to say nothing of 22,956 full meals. During this time 1847 sick men were aided by the canteen, seventy-nine of them being removed from trains as too sick to travel, and receiving imme diate hospital attention. Canteen work is nearly over, but the Red Cross still has vitally important work to do. Every membership in the Third Red Cross Roll Call will be a vote ot confidence In the American Red Cross. ' DR.
