its inception.
"P.y buying carefully," said one of
the committee chairmen of the Young

"Money invested in War Savings

Women's Clubs Are Scares In South
Amtrlca
The Club d Senoras la Santiago,
Chile. Is the only organization for
women ot the highest caste In South
America, says Mrs. Ida Clyde Clark,
well-known author of New York city,
who has rcceutly returned from an
Investigating trip in the Iatln-Ainert-can
count rle-a for the War Work
Council of the Young WVmcn's
Christian Association.
Mrs. Clark visited the club, which
is purely a cultural one, and met all of
the officer. ".However," ahe says,
"there are evidences everywhere of
an awakening of social consciousness
among the higher class women ot
South America. I was nskod to speak
on the woman movement In North
America one day In Buenos Aires,
thinking I would address a dozen or
so women in my hostess' drawing
room. To my surprise I found myself
in the Italian Opera House with every
sent occupied by women anxious to
hear what wo women are doing In
this country. Fifty or sixty women,
wives of the most prominent men of
the city, called upon me In the next
few days to find out In greater detail
Hbout the liberty which North Ameri
can women have in thinking and act
ing for themselves. One night the
wife of a wealthy banker brought me
a copy of a book which she had writ
ten on "The Moral Question." ex
plaining that she could not possibly
let her husband know what she had
done.
"Nevertheless, there Is scarcely a
profession or calling into which South
American women have not entered In
large numbers and these are Increas
ing rapidly. One of the great diffi
culties in the way of women working
is that there is no place in all South
America where a business of profes
sional woman can go alone and get
a noon-day luncheon, although every
few doors places are provided where
men go und drink coffee at all hours
of the day. Because of this all pro
fessional and Industrial women are
forced- to carry a cold luncheon to
work. Housing difficulties are so bail
in the small towns and country dis
tricts that the cities are over-supplied
with school teachers while there ure
not enough in the country."
HE'S GOT MONEY
"v.'o's got money." Admit tnat wnm '
you hear that said of a man you in-;
stinctively look him over look him
over pretty respectfully as a rule
Whether you want to admit it or not.
you have a bit of admiration for him.
Why?
liecause he is a man above the gen
eral run of human beings. He is a man
who is Independent a man who looks
the other fellow in the eye and tells
him to "go to hell." He can't be bill
lied. He Knows his rights and is in a
position to demand them. His money
gives him that power.
Independence is the open doorway
to happiness. Only the possession ol
money or of things worth money can
give independence. There Is only one
legitimate nay to get money. Earn it
and save it. All the capital In the
world today was first earned and then
saved.
You everyman and everj'wnian
can be independent. Each week or
month take ho much out of your wage
or salary envelope and invest In Thrift
and War Savings Stamps. Live on
what is left. Meanwhile the money
put into the government securities
goes to work earning 4 per cent Inter
est compounded quarterly.
Make them say "He's got money"
when you go by.
