We are awakening from the mists of sentimentalism Jlnd yo
litical demagogy to realize that we face a great national labor
shortage. . The United States Training Service of the iVpartniem
i Labor says we are four million laborers short. It nays if every
soldier were back on the job our country would still be 4.000.00')
men short of a normal supply of laborers as we. had them before
the war.
For twenty years before 1915 we got In round' numbers a
million workers a year by immigration and for four years that
has-been cut ofT.
The training service of the Department of tabor dare not say
vhat common sense would dictate give us back our normal sup
ply. We absorbed the million a year to good advantage. What
the wet needs is plenty of unskilled labor.
The training service sharps drop the little fact that we are
ToO.000 houses shy in the nation. Remedy more "highly edu
cated" carpenters.
Housing is only one item we are short on, end in the mean
time the laborers of our country will pay millions in shape of
higher rents. I
