OUR NATIONAL PROBLEM
" Our problem, says the Federal Re
servo Board, is to convert less essen
tial Into moro essential credit and to
convert less essential Into more essen
tial production and distribution of
goods. Tho saving of credit and money
goes hand in hand with the saving of
labor and materials in the program of
adjusting the business of the Nation to
a war basis. Our best hope of avoid
ing competition between the Govern
ment and its citizens for credit, money
labor, and materials, which can only
result In credit and price inflation and
higher costs of lvlng is saving.
WHEN PEACE C0ME8
Some day peace wll come. Thou
sands millions of men will suddenly
be thrown back again into civil life.
Consider the vastness of the readjust
ment that will be necessary., Look
back at the period of reconstruction
after our own Civil War. Prepare for
this new period of reconstruction. The
day of reckoning is bound to come. Be
gin to save now. Thrift is the need of
the present, the hope of the future.
Liberty Loan Bonds, War Savings,
the safest securities In the world, are
a wise provision for the day peace
comes.
THE ECONOMY OF VICTORY
No matter what this war costs the
Government and the people of the
United States In the way of money, it
is going to be much cheaper to win
this war than to lose it.
The commercial and financial losses
that would follow a German victory
are not to be calculated. All that we
spent would be lost. Indemnities be
yond calculation wouljl have to be paid
and along with these losses would
come a continuing loss In foreign com
merce that would spell disaster.
With these material losses we would
lose our national liberty and independ
ence, our power to secure our interna
tional rights, our right to live in a
world ruled by the dictates of human
ity and civilization.

Meeting Will Be for Loyal Legion of
City and Community
Col. John Leader of the military de
partment of the University of Oregon
will adress the Home Guard of the
Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumber
men at the Methodist church Sunday
evening.
The Loyal Legion men and Home
Guard men from up the valley have
all been Invited to participate in this
meeting and a good attendance Is ex
pected. '.The men of Coburg and Thurston
have already responded nnd have ox
pressed their desire to participate in
the meeting.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Cyr of this
city received a letter this morning
from their sdh Bert Cyr who Is with

tionary Forces In Franco saying that
he is well and happy, and that tho
American boys are showing the Hun
what good soldiers they are. The
lotter also contained a tiny boquet of
for-get-mo-nots which had been picked
in Franco moro than a month ago.

Egglman will have ono of tho finest
confectionery stores In the valley.

pastor of the Frco Methodist church
and his wife arc going to Cottage
Grove, to visit Mr. and Mrs. Georgo
Crawford. Mr. Chllds will go on to
Medford. to take charge of the Free
Methodist church at that place. Mrs.
Chllds will follow him In two weeks.
Reverend L. M. Philips of Cottago
Grove was in -Springfield to visit his
daughter-in-law Mrs. J. S. Phelps.
Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Lee are very
proud of their new daughter-in-law,
Mrs. Ernest Lee.
Reverend Mary E. Buckbeo and son
