ination for this branch of the service

Di bollard was born In Tlgardvllle,
Oregon, on June G, 1877. Ho attended
an academy for three years and then
entered Willamette University. He
graddatod front tho Medical depart
ment in 1907, practiced medicine In
Marcola for two years, and came to
Springfield In 1909. He has been
practicing hero since that time.
Dr. Pollard taught in tho public
schools for two years before attend
ing Wlllamctto University, and since
his residence hero ho has been a mem
ber of the school board for five years.
At present he is financial secretary
of tho Methodist Episcopal church of
this city.
Conservation Committee Meets

for tho Sprlngflold district, of which
Mrs. J. S. Lusby la chairman, met,
Tuesday and decided to hold a mass
mooting of tho ladles of tho town, to
day to tor ma Study club. This club
will study methods of conserving and
will be given demonstrations by Miss
Anderson, domestic science instructor
at tho Lincoln school. The ladles of

Having had an opportunity' of visit
Inf Fort Stevens I found the boys In
splendid health, happy and busy, and
almost every one comfortably quart
ered In new contonments. During my
visit the-boys that were -left in the
third company now tho flfteenth(
were moving Into their new canton
ments. Tho old first, second and third com
panies of tho Oregon Coast artillery
does not now exist as the boys In these
companies, who were not transferred
to the C5th battalion coast artillery
and Into other divisions of tho army,
are now in the 13th, 14th and 15th
companies, training and anxiously
awaiting their time for transfer to
other fields of service.
Captain Huntly,. former captain of
the third company is now captain of
tho Eleventh company and is acting
fire and battalion commander at The
Fiva of tho Sprlngneia boys aro In
Battery. C, 65th battalion Coast ar
tilleryCorporal Dell Hinson, Lester
Hill, Ivan McKlnuey, Paul Myers, Rus
sell Keenan and Russell Dimm. These
boys expect to leave for France with
their battalion in the near future and
aro apparently very eager to be off
to do their bit for their country, as
are all the boys and I can assure the
people that a finer looking lot of boys
and a more patriotic, bunch cannot be
produced than is to be found at Fort
Stevens. All are ready and willing
to sacrifice their lives if need be for
their country and flag, and the United
States will hear of brave deedB done
by tho Fort Stevens' boys when they
got to the front.
I arrived at Fort Stevens Saturday
afternoon at 1:30 P. M. and was taken
to the cantinmcnt where tho Ninth
and Tenth sections consisting t 40
boys of Battery C, aro quartered. Thero
I found the boys busy cleaning and
pressing their clothes and those who
who had been fortunate enough tc got
a pass were getting ready for a trip
to Astoria, for tho evening and some
for over Sunday.
The boys are becoming very adopt
at minding their clothing and always
have them In good repair and looking
rino, Thej nro allowed a portion of
Saturday afternoon, when not on
special duty to do their mending and
pressing, It is necessary to, do some
of it on Sunday if the boys do not get
tima during tho weok.

Hugh Sandgathe of this city is mak
ing preparations, to Improve his Mo
hawk ranch. He Is' going to build a
fine new bars for general farm pur
poses, 32 by 54 feet, which will have
& cement floor, a pressure water sys
tem, feed grinder, roller, and a hay
track and fixtures which will be
large enough to lift an entire load of
hay at one time. Stanchions will be
installed for cows. When finished
this barn wilT bo-one of the beBtequIp
ped In the country. Mr. Sandgathe is
also, planning on building a hog house
a "chicken house, and a pump house.

This farm has been leased for a term
of five years by E. E. Morrison of this
city, who will have Mr. and Mrs. I.
A. Smith run the farm for him. Mr.

William C. Pitman and his wifq
Mabel Pitman of Boise, Idaho com
mitted suicide Wednesday of last week
by taking carbolic acid. Mrs. Pitman
who was Mrs. V. B. Ledman before
her marriage to Mr Pitman , is a
daughter of Mr and Mrs. J. L. Malsoh
now of Bend, Oregon, and formerly
of this city.
Mrs, Pitman killed herself at their
home, in Boise at about 3 o'clock in
tho afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Mar
tin, friends of the Pltmans, took Mr.
Pitman homo with them for the even
ing While there he visited a drug
store, obtained somo more carbolic
acid, which he took and died at 8:15
that evening. Domestic trouble seems
to have been tho cause of tho double
tragody.
Mrs. Pitman was dlvorcod from
Judge V. B. Ledman on January 25,
flvo days lator on January 30, she
married Pitman In Utah. They then
went to Boise. They had been mar
ried only two weeks when the tradegy
occurred.
Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Malosh, parents
of Mrs Pitman, lived in this city un
til about three yoars ago when they
moved to Bend, Oregon. Mr. Malosh I
was a carpenter while here. While
tho wlfo of Judge Ledman, Mrs. Pit
man visited her parents In this city.

Enrollment of 250,000 Skilled

lic schools In Springfield has been ap
pointed enrollment officer In the Pub
lic Service Reserve, for this district
and Is ready to take up his duties ia
that capacity.
Franklin T. Griffith, State Director
of the Public Service reserve, thhi
week laaugaarated the state wiie'
drive for speeding up the shipballd
ing program in Oregon.
The program Is nation wide in scope
and calls for the enrollment of 250,
000 skilled men who will be available
for service in the various shipyards
of the country when the United. States
Shipping Board brings its program up
to the maximum producing capacity.
Of the 260,000 skilled men needed
by the country, Oregon's quota will
be 3204. This number is divided in
to. 81 different classes of skilled labor
and are to be enrolled throughout the
entire state. ,

state and wRl have for that purpose
the service of all 'the' county chairmen
of the State Council of Defense who
will conduct local drives in their own
counties.
This enrollment of skilled labor will
constitute what will be known as the
"United Stales Shipyard Volunteers"
and will be conducted with the least
possible disturbance to existing Indus
tries. The men are not to be called
into shipbuilding service at once but
are merely to bo registered, so that
wfien the .government calls for them,
they wli be'Yeady,-''They will not bo
called, until needed for work in a par
ticular yard and for a particular pur
pose and will bo paid tho prevailing
wage in the yards. Men will be em
ployed only as fast as housing is pro
vided. The .men who enroll are not.
because of enrollment, exempt from
the draft, but it is to be borne in mind
that men who are at work In the ship
yards, now, are placed In a different
classification under the draft.
In connection with this drive, Ore
gon has again led the nation, the first
application for enrollment received
by the United States Shipping Board
at Washington, being that Lesllo
H. Towne, of Halsey, Oregon.

Director Griffith is confident that be
fore the drive is over, the nerollment
will 'show a total of very closo to 20,
000.

Mrs. Anna Baker commenced suit
Saturday against Anna Mullen and
others, to foreclose a mortgage on an

Lad Has Major Operation
The .eight yea,r pld son ot Mr. and
Mrs. L, R. Crow of Wendllng was
suddenly taken with acute appendicitis
and was operated on at the Mercy hos
pital Monday night. He is doing fine.
