THURSDAY, JANUARY 3, 1918 DRAFT INFORMATION Except to fill vacancies In calls already made, no more men will be drafted from Ore gon or other states hefore Feb ruary 15. As all questionnaires will be completed before that date, this will give men taken hereafter, except such few as may be needed prior to Febru ary 15 to fill vacancies, the ad vantage of the new classifica tion system. Very few men would have been taken from Oregon in any event prior to the next draft, which it is now announced will be not earlier than February 15 This is one of only 10 states t,hat have already filled theilp quotas In the first draft, barring a few vacancies caused by rejections at the training camps. Future draft quotas are to be filled first from Class 1, compris ing men without dependents. They will be drafted from de ferred clarifications nly when Class 1 is exhausted, thus mak ing it necessary to go to the next class for enough men to fill up the quota. An exception to this will be made in the case of experts and men highly skilled in agricul ture or industrie8. It is announ ced that the Government son will call or a large number of men of this special class. They will be taken as needed for such special work from whatever classification they may have been granted. A limited number of officers not now in active service, and retired officers of the Oregon National Guard, who are phys ically fit and between the ages of 23 and 47, are eligible for en listment as privates first class for attendance at the next Of ficers' Training Camp8, which begin January 15. Official word to this-effect has just been re ceived by John M. Williams, Acting Adjutant General, from th eChief of the Bureau of Mil itia Affairs at Washington, with the request that It be given pub licity. Applications for the camps by such officers must be approved by the Bureau. Those qualify lng at the camps, which will be held in Southern California and tlfe Southern States, will re ceive commissions. 1 WAR SAVINGS ri'War Savings Stamps mark an epoch in ur national life." Secretary, of the Treasury -McAdoo. - Many a Buccouful bn&inew I mJM9aaaaSaav0aa)l i iiBpyitiBE man has "aid that tho saving of his first dollar was tho most Important act of his life; that it marked tho beginning of a habit and a course of conduct to which ho attributed his suc cess. Something very analogous to this it is believed, is going to bo tho effect on the American Na tion of the War Savings cam paign. Not only aro millions of individual citizens going to be gin to save, but this habit of economy and saving is going to be a collective movement, a movement nt of individuals alone but of the Nation. Tlie habit of saving former now has a deeper Incentive than ordinary. We are saving now not alone for selfl8h reasons. We aro saving now from patri otism, saving not alone for our selves but for our country. The combination of patriotism and thrift is, indeed, going t make the War Savings campaign an epoch in our national life. It is not only going .to be a thing of tremendous benefit to millions o.f citizens, It is ging to be a thing of tremendous advantage to the Nation as a whole, and. affect our whole national life. It marks the beginning of a new era in American life, an era of economy, good sense, and pat riotism.
