Church Pledge
Reverend E. C. I'lollard, of Boston,
gave a very interesting lecture on
"The Wonders of the Mammoth Cavo"
at the Methodist church Tuosday ev
ening under the auspices of the En
worth League. No admission was
charged but a collection was taken
up at the close of tho meeting. This
collection amounted to $5.30 and will
be applied on the Epworth League
church memorial fund.
Mr. Pollard, who was at the head
of a party of tourists when he visited
this "greatest natural wonder in tho
world" had 24 oil paintings with which
he Illustrated his lecture.
The cave was discovered1 In 1S09
by a men who was hunting. . He was
at the time tracking a bear and while
following it was lead to Uie very open
ing of the cave, which is believed to
be the most wonderful thins In the
world by Rev. Pollard. "Therefore,"
said Reverend Pollard, "this bear
was the greatest bear that ever lived."
One hundred and sixty miles of the
cave have been explored. The air
in the cave changes every three days.
and upon returning to the top of the
ground one recognizes the difference
in the air, that In the cave being more
bracing and invigorating.
The party went into the cave at
7 o'clock one evening and finished
the trip, sixteen miles at 7 o'clock
tbe next morning. At midnight the
party found themselves at the Mam
mouth hotel where a meal was served
The trip through the cave costs $2
for the shorter trail and J3 for the
longer trail, the sixteen mile route.

Mr. and Mrs. Guy DeLay of La
Grande, are visiting with Mrs. De
Lay's parents Mr. and Mrs. M. C.
Bressler of Springfield, over Thanks
giving. Mr. De Lay, who is an East
ern Oregon cattle man, was one of
the successful exhibitors at the stock
show held recently In Portland.
The Rebekah lodge held Its regular
meeting and also the election of offi
cers Monday evening. Tho officers
who were elected for the coming term
were: Mrs. Henry Korf, noble grand;
Kate Drummette, vice-grand; Mrs.
Riley Snodgrass, recording secretary;
Herbert Walker, financial secrotary,
and Cora Hlnson, treasurer.
Retiring officers of the lodge are:
Mrs. E. W. Collins, noble grand; Mrs.
Henry Korf, vice-grand; Mrs. Riley
Snodgrass, recording secretary; Mrs.
Al. Montgomery, financial secretary;
and Mrs. Hannah Hill, treasurer.
Plans for a children's night to be
held during the Christmas holidays
are being made. A committee com
posed of: -Mrs. Ethel Bally, Mrs. Cur
tis Hayden, Mrs. R. P. Mortenson,
Mrs. Hannah Hill, and Mrs. Riley

Eugene Thursday morning Sadie Al

her pocket. Reaching tho Eugene
high school building where tho Insti
tute was held she discovered that
she had lost the bill through a hole In
her pocket. Miss Allen is teaching
near Dexter this year.
