THURSDAY, NOV. 15, 1917. THE FOOD PLEDGE Now that we have signed the food conservation pledge, jitst what are we going to do about keeping it? This is a question that we should all ask ourselves, and if we are good Americans the an swer will be emphatic we are going to conscientiously com ply with the conditions of the pledge every day in the week, and at every meal. Food saving is the immediate' and urgent duty of every man, woman and child in civilian life. It has been asked by our gov- ernment, and it is a necessity!" for the success of this war. The fact that food conserva tion in the United States is not compulsory but Is merely asked j Sargeant. Willis; Smith, B. D.; Slg as a volunteer service should be nor A': Snooks s': slgnor BaBl,; an unfailing appeal to Ameri canism. If you are behind your government you will keep your pledge and be glad of the oppor- tunity to eat a little less of the . . prescribed foods in order that r U ,1 r 1 i- :i me unucucu wumcii aim tmi-, dren of our allies may have more; also that the men fight ing our battles at the front may be abundantly supplied with "fighting fuel." There are many branches of , service in Uncle Sam's army. I The food conservation service is the only branch open to f every man, woman and child in the notion. The enlistment ! should be 100 per cent, and each enlistment should mean a definite saving of wheat, meat, sugar and fats the four sta ples of which there is a world Bhortage and which must be supplied by the United States to our allies in this war against war. There is no one appointed to watch you and see that you keep it, except yourself. Are you "on the job?" SUGAR HOARDING Individual selfishness and lack of patriotism is threaten ing, in various parts of the country, Oregon not excepted, to undo the splendid work of the United States Food Admin istration in .. regulating .. the prices of staple foods and pre venting profiteering by whole sale and retail grocers. Reports are being made to tho office of W. B. Ayer, federal food administrator for Oregon, that private individuals have been buying and hoarding cer tain staples, notably sugar, be yond all their reasonable needs. "The person who does this," said Assistant Federal Food Ad ministrator W. K. Newell, "is very short-sighted, as well as entirely selfish and unpatriotic. The United States Food Ad ministration has given the pub lic, assurance., that., there., is enough sugar for nil, and has arranged for an equitable dis tribution and a fnir price, through its system of licensing the wholesale jobbers and large retailers. Under this system, which was expressly designed for the benefit of the people, all possibility of profiteering has been eliminated and the public assured of an abundant supply at reasonable prices. Now comes the individual hoarder, selfishly bent upon piling up an unnecessary store for himself, and threatens to upset the whole plan. It should be plain to anyone that if individuals hoard supplies in excess of their own needs, others will not be able to secure enough. These cases of individual hoarding are being reported to Washington, and, undoubtedly, steps will be taken to prevent this unpatriot ic interference with the Food Administration's plans." When Dreams Come True Showing tho Advonturos of a Wealthy Now Yorkors Spry Young Son. From time to time during past theatrical seasons, stories have come to tho newspapers regarding the sue- , cossful engagement played "When I Dreams Coma Truo" In Now York, i Chicago and Boston. I Our local theater goers who havo j no doubt read these stories, will now havo nn opoprtunlty of seeing this widely discussed musical comedy when it comes hero to tho Eugene , theater, Monday, November 15. ' Thu nlav tells of tho adventures of a wealthy Now Yorker's Bpry young son, who becomes Involved with a French dancer, while he Is !n Paris, has his allowance cut off by the Irate parent, and thus is compelled to go home in tho Btecragc. In tho first cabin thcro Is a young girl whom ho Eoes and with whom ho falls In lovo from afar, but of courso cannot meet until both are on shore, where trouble accumulates for them. In the ocurso of the play, the young fellow finds himself simultaneously and unwilling ly engaged to three or four females of varying ages and charms, and it is not until the last minute that he Is free to marry the dream girl of the ocean liner. The scenic investiture of the play is elaborate to the last degree. There are nearly a score of dancing numbers, showing the latest develop ments of the modern dances in ad dition to the dances that were popu lar a score of years back. Tho song numbers introduced in "When Dreams Come True" -are all of tho popular whistleable variety and wore composed by Silvio Hein, who gained fame as the composer of some of Marie Cahill's most pronounced song hits. Tho chorus, composed principally of pretty young girls who can sing, dance and wear gownB fetchlngly, Is one of the features of Uie perform ance.
