THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 1917. THE DOUBLE CHIN MUST GO "Lay your double chin on tho alter of liberty!" This Is the slogan of tho food conservation crusade. And how timely it is. Just when the fat men have been playing golf to reduce their chins and paunch es have voted, with a painful sense of duty, to have the links plowed up for war gardens, and have found themselves too short of breath to do much gardening themselves; just when the fat women who are always trying some new method of reducing have bound themselves to sit at sewing machines for the Red Cross and have been growing fatter than ever in consequence along comes the Women's Committee of the Council of National Defense and tells them how to put off their double chins! The men are told that a weed in a garden is an emeny of the nation. If vou can t do a lot in any one day, do a little. The women are asked to go from house to house getting Mr Hoover's pledge cards signed iby every housewife and every household worker. Both are asked to abide by the food rules on the cards. And if both do abide by them, we. will have no starved and anem- ic nation. Rather we will have a nation of fit and fine looking men ana women, aim we vui almost wholly abolish those mid dlelife diseases which doctors say are due to the overfeeding and underexercising of the aver age American. On with the food rules! Off with the double chins! Here is the pledge: 1. To eat one wheatless meal a day. 2. To eat beef, mutton or pork not more than once a day. 3. To economize in the use of butter. 4. To limit my daily allowance of sugar in tea or coffee and in other ways. 5. To eat more vegetables, fruit and fish. 6. To urge in my home or the restaurants I frequent the necessity of economy. THE PRESIDENT EXPLAINS "It is plain enough how we were forced into the war. The extraordinary insults and ag gressions of the Imperial Ger man Government left us no self respecting choice but to take up arms in defense of our rights as a free people and of our honor as a soverign government tTho military masters of Ger many denied us the right to be neutral. They filled our un suspecting communities with spies and conspirators and Bought to corrupt the opinion of our people in their own be half "Much as we had desired peace, it was denied us, and not pjt our own choice.
