THE MODERN PRISON The "new Pennsylvania state prison is a farm of 500C acres which Ib cultivated by the con victs. There is no stockade around the land. No armed guards menace the men as they pursue their tasks. They are not forbidden to talk with one another or with visitors. The ministers "who wish to carj for their "spiritual welfare are not syiiject to insult. , The new pen itentiary actually carries out in practice many of the great hu manitarian ideas of William Penh, who founded the state. " The farm was a wild land when Pennsylvania obtained it for a prison site. The convicts by their labor have cleared the fields, made roads and ercc-.tl buildings. One of the bu-.kl-ings their bands have made is a -.huge ecu crete dining hall. The flag of liberty flies from almost every pillar. The room is light The impivssion is charmMg. Here a man might well learn to forsake his wicked ways and make a good citizen of himself. Last summer the convicts raised 320 acres of wheat, :!3d acres of oats, 145 acres of coin and a lot more. Their wortccon trasts sjinewhat vividly with that of the Oregon convicts who under the current system, have been raising cain. The Pennsylvania prison, rrn on modai o humanitarian prin ciples, Ls joung as yet. Its tull fruits have not ripened. But even as a beginning it is a finan cial success. The convicts earned last year a clear profit of $5000 for the state after pay ing the expenses of their deten tion and discipline. Pretty well, is it not? And they have not taken the bread out of the mouth of a solitary honest laborer out side the prison. The Pennsylvania method is creative and helpful. It is whol ly good, free from all traces o medieval cruelty and ignorant politics. What may happen to it by and by we are not bold e nough to try to predict, for pol itics is a gnawing cancer, par ticularly in Pennsylvania, and most good things perish before it. But just now the new pris on is ideal. Perhaps the decent people of Pennsylvania can keep it so. THE LOOKING GLASS Way along In January We surely thot 'twas Spring For the sun came out by starts and stops, i And washing windows was"tho thing." Intermission One moment please whllo wo change reels. Later developments dashed our hopes Also budding poets' Spring love poems But we're sure summer's come to stay at last THE LAW OF AVERAGE The law of average is the law of nature. Thereis a happy medium in everything. A thing can be overdone or underdone Success lies just at the point in dicated as the medium or the average point. Nature has taught us a great lesson hi the law of average. Men can ex ist only in a mean temperature; too hot or too cold destroyes. Men thrive best in a mean diet; too much or too little destroys. Everything in nature is based on the same law of average. So Our business and social life should be based on average We must work; but not too much or too little. We must relax rest and recreate; but not idle, shirk or procrastinate. Let'B find the happy medium in every thing; be moderate, temperate, For yesterday (in Springfield) saw five straw "domes." -wo BUSINESS INCREASES HALF Springfield Creamery Making Much Butter and Ice Cream Daily. Pew people realize how big a vol ume of business is done by the Spring field Creamery. The amount ofcream taken In has increased over half in the past year, and they are now churn ing butter twice daily, and making from 15 to 20 gallons of Ice cream every day. Nov, since the weather is getting warmer, more ice cream will be made. A new cream route in the Creswell neighborhood has been taken on, making five routes a week, with four men driving. The top market price Is always paid for cream, 39 cents being Uie price Just now. The Creamery ap preciates the patronage of the farm ers during its operation here, and hopes to receive their future patron age. Springfield people should re member that they are helping keep the money at home when they ask for "Rosebud" butter or "White Moun tain" Ice cream. LEARN MUSIC AT HOME!
