THE FARM SHOULD PAY
THIS YEAR
Thirty additional days of
spring planting may mean for
the Pacific Northwest the dif
ference between a discouraging
ly small harvest and an encour
agingly large one. The situa
tion Is growing more satisfac
tory every day. There will be
more land farmed in Lane coun
ty this year than there has been
put under the plow for a genera
tion. This county is only typ
ical of all counties in Oregon,
Washington and Idaho.
The wheat' prospects for the
whole country this spring are
decidly small. A survey made
by the Federal government in
dicates that the United States
would have very little if any
more thanenough for her own
needs. The allies are depenal
izing on us for their food supply
and a crop shortage would
mean an international disaster.
The laVeness of the spring
"will enable many farmers to re
seed or to sow additional acres
to grain. Many districts are
reseeding to insure a full crop.
All efforts must be made to du
plicate the large 1916 crop and
to even surpass the hearvest of
last year.
There are two factors in cul
tivating every available acre
that is causing worry to many
farmers money and seed. Not
a single acre should be let lay
fallow because the owner can
not buy seed for it. In Ne
braska, the elevator interests
have furnished seed at prices
below market quotations in or
der to have every acre yield a
harvest. Bankers and mer
chants cooperated to finance
the purchase of seed, where the
farmers needed such assistance.
At a time when every acre's
product will count toward win
ning this war every banker and
merchant should do Ills part in
increasing the yield. Farming
will pay this year not only in
the Willamette Valley but in all
America. Every acre that pro
duces a crop will mean that
much added to the prosperity
of thecommunity. The man who
tills every available foot of
ground this year is not only a
patriot, but he is also a good 1
business man. I
Uncle Sam paid Russia about
two cents an acre for Alaska.
Last year it yielded $16,000,000
worth of gold and $40,000 in cop
per besides many other pro
ducts. Some real estate spec
ulation, that!
How about those parkings
and front yards? Don't let this
