It must le the splritfiowever. that, deprecating war, will line up, Bholder to sholder man to man, without any wavering and fight for the principles of gov ernment upon which this nation was founded, the - principles -jvhich maintain our national rights throughout the world. America is the world's ideal na tion and the warring lands are destined when they are again restored toreason, to adopt the democracy that has made the United States great. Now is the time for America td impress Its ideals upon the whole world and to do so we must stand firm for those prin ciples of government that have made us what we are. We must forget, our personal pol itical prejudices, put aside local political differences and line up for true Americanism. We are in position to make the United States more powerful and influ ential than ever before. We can do so by backing up the ad ministration, inviting weakkneed politicians to brace up and be real men and join the common cause. The very destiny of this country is now wrapped up in loyalty to the principles for which our forefahters fought They should be as dear to us to day as they were to our revolu tionary fathers. In revolution -'ary days the old world learned I; that America ment business '.Let it know today that we still ' mean business. A united Amer ' ica in defense of its rights will go farther toward ending tho -war than anything else that couldhappen. Alhambra Advo - cate. Americans of German Birth The loyalty of Americans of 'German birth includes the duty, however tryirig of active resist ance against any and every foe Of the American republic, includ ing the government of their na tive country, specifically and un conditionally renounce In the solemn obligation to protect and preserve the government of the United States, says Frederick L. Hoffman statistician of the Pru dential and a native of Germany. It is for Americans of German birth and ancestry to do even more than their required share in behalf of the national cause, so that the world's vanishing faith in German honor may be redeemed by those who hold themselves to be accounjtable only to the Supreme Being and the government and the people of their adopted country. The world is not at war with the Ger man government and Its ru tit less and ill considered military policy, without parallel in mod ern history. In closing he pays this tribute to Old Glory: In all th,e world there is no flag more inspiring than the Stars and Stripes; tho fairest symbol of unstained honor, after more than a century of national life and international relations, life and service under that flag is a priceless privilege and a guaranty of good faith In peace and war. Loyalty to that flag is the supremo duty, not only to tho Amelrcan republic, but to the cause of government by tho consent of tho govorncd, and liberty and democracy throughout tho world. Under that flag Americans of German birth and ancestry, with tho countless millions of other or igins, have found a new freedom j which is to conserve and nialn-j tain enough to have lived for. ; Above and boyond the glory of j empire and the achievements of j military power lies the higher duty of the cause of truth and "the righteousness teth a nation." that exnl- THE LOOKING GLASS They say waits."
