EDUCATORS' ADVANCEMENT
The teachers of Oregon adop
ted a new code of ethics at their
annual meeting in Portland last
week. The principal reason for
subscribing to this code is to
place the rank of the pedagogue
on an equal plane with the doc
tor or lawyer or banker. Some
"of the principles laid down in
the new rules are:
"To govern one's conduct iu
public and private life by the
highest principles of courage,
justice and truth.
"To be loyal to all movements
looking toward the raising of
the standards of the teaching
profession with a reciprocal loy
alty between teachers, superin
tendents and principals.
"Not to make application for
an administrative position until
a vacancy has occurred, nor to
apply for other positions until
every effort has been made to
determine whether a vacancy ex
ists. "Never to underbid.
i "Never to undermine.
"To withdraw immediately aU
applications when a contract has
been signed and to notify im
mediately all persons who may
be actually assisting in securing
a position."
This is a movement that is
well worth while. The teach
ing profession in Oregon until
the last four or five years has
been far below standards set by
California and Washington. The
state legislature has been rais
ing the educational requirements
at its last sessions so that from
a legal point of view the teach
er has had to be better quali
fied than formerly to hold his
position.
Now the teachers have taken
it upon themselves to see to it
that a teacher must be equipped
with more than a high school
or college diploma and a certifi
cate to teach in the schools.
A teacher is a public servant
and probably has more Influence
on the growing generation of
children than all other classes
outside the home. If the teacii
er in the public school is the one
to mold the lives and charac
ters of our children, the teach
ers should be the best type o?
citizen that we have. Not only
should the teacher know books,
but he should know and prac
tice good citizenship and should
be a leader in all public com
munity affairs.
Regardless of codes of ethics
the best results cannot be at
tained until certain changes are
made. If the teaching profes
sion is to be on the same plane
with the lawyer or physician tho
members of the teaching
profession must expect that all
members of their profession
ehajll serve a pertain number
of years in preparation for their
life work. At present in Oregon
there are too many raw high
school graduates and college
failures that turn to teaching
as an excuse to make a living
or as a means of earning enough
money to get a start in life.
One of the first principles of the
so-called dignified professions
is that the members 'Bhall be
well prepared before they" start
out practicing. '- ''
Wheto'tho profession raises its
own standards and makes its
embers more efficient it will
receive a greater recognition
from the public and with that
recognition will come greater
compensation.

Home Restaurant Quits.
On Wednesday afternoon, tho Homo
retaurant closed its doors and thopro
prietors, Mr. and Mrs. F. B. McCreary
left for Eugene. There was not suffi
cient business to Justify In remaining
open they said. The fixtures revert
to the former owner, C. O. Foster, of
Eugene. Mr. Foster will not re-open
the restaurant.
