for Public Sendee Commissioner WESTERN DISTOICT Hundreds of Dollars in Pri I If It t; FFtED G. BUCHTEL REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE WHAT THE PRESS SAYS "Fred G. Buchtel, candidate lor the republican nomination for public sdrvice commissioner in the western district, today an nounced his platform, and It: merits support, for it represents . the cause of the people.' Ore gon Grange Bulletin, Eugene, j , Pd. Adv. HANDLING FRUITS is undoubtedly of value. On the other hand it can he relied upon to prevent loss not due to careless-handling. Injured fruit will decay whether it is'precooled or not, and for this reason precool ing is not recommended unless it is preceded by adequate care in nicking and packing. It is also pointed out that anv ; iielay between the picking ana the shipping of fruit hastens de cay. The amount of damage done in this way will vary, of course, with the weather condi tions, but under any circum stances it is considerable. In view of these facts, it is rec commended that every pre caution should be taken in pick ing the fruit not to bruise it, and that it should be transferred as as few times as possible from one container into another. While it is being held in the or chard after picking it should be ..kept in the shade, and the haul "irig wagon should be provided with good springs and covered with canvas in order to keep off sun and dirt. In grading, all damaged fruit should be culled out, and as soon as the shipment has been packed it should be placed in the refrigerator car. The extra expense of careful handling, it is said, will be more than offset by the reduction of losses from decay and the ability of the fruit to maintain itself in good condition while exposed for sale. If these suggestions are adopted generally by fruit grow ers and in consequence a larger ! proportion of the crop marketed fresh, it is believed that the in dustry will benefit greatly and its extensiou will be made profit able. That this fact is being rec ognized by fruit growers is indi cated by the cooperation afford ed the department In its investi gation by the growers in the Willamette Valley.
