Home time durlngtbe lat half of the twentieth centnry possibly at the
dawn of tbe twentyflrst the Cathedral of 8t John the Divine, in New York
City, will be formally dedicated. This, the most remarkable building of the west
ern brmlspbere, marks the entrance of tbe United States upon aa era of cathe
dra) construction in the manner and the eplrlt of the cathedral builder of old
Europe. For this csthedral is to be compsrsule In cost sise and beauty with the
grandest of tbe ecrhwiastk-al piles ot the old world.
Its construction will require msny years, perhaps a century. Its totsl cost
estlmsted upon the cost of Isbor snd materiel to-day, Is placed at $15,000,000.
To date over $2,000,000 has been spent upon tbe cathedral;, the sites. Including
three city blocke. cost $872,000. Tbe bsse of the catnednl etands 135 feet above
the ses level. Completed It will be beyond sll comparison the most conspicuous
building In New York, snd will be visible on clesr dsys for about fifty miles.
The new cstbedrsl wUI be one of the larjest churches in the world. It will
be built In the round-arch Gothic style. The messurements of the structure give
little idea of Ita enormona proportions. When complete two entire blocks of ordi
sry buildings could be pieced slong the central aisle. The tallest skyscraper
. will be dwsrfed by compsrison with its f rest spire 440 feet in height It will
be built entirely of solid mssonry. The foundations will be required to support a
weight of about flO.000,000 pounds. Much time was spent in preparing tbem. St,
Tatrick's Cathedral, heretofore tbe largest church edifice In America, will be
completely dwsrfed by comparison. St. Patrick's Cstbedrsl was erected at a
cost of $2,500,000, The choir alone of the new cath-dral will accommodate more
people tbso any other church in New York, Including 8t. I'atrick's Cathedral.
The cost of other American churches seems trifling by compsrison with the
new etrurture. Trinity Church, for example, cost .k.uju lae Ainany v,ame
drsl cost only about $100,000. Tbe new "Old South" Church in Boston cost
$500,000. RIchardsou's Trinity Church, In the same city, heretofore considered the

Distance. f4the Dog-Star.
Dr. David. Gill, whose measure of
the parallaxes of the stars, by means
of which their distances can be calcu
lated, are among the most accurate
known, has recently deduced anew the
results of his observations of Slrius,
the dog-star, which , . Is the brightest
star In the heavens. He think we may
now regard its parallax as satisfactor
ily determined at 0.37 of a second of
arc. This makes the distance of Slrius
In miles 51,000,000.000,000. In other
words, the" dog-star Is nearly five hun
dred and fifty thousand times farther
