Washington n Planter.
Aa a Virginia planter Washington'a
chief crop waa tobacco. Thia tobacco
waa shipped to the tandon market tinder
his own name, loaded upon Teasels which
aailed up the Fotomac to Mount Vernon,
or to other landings convenient to it An
agent In London disposed of the ship
ments. .
Twice a year Washington would for
ward lists of needful articles for farm
and household to this agent, requesting
that the things be purchased and shipped
to Mount Vernon. Wearing apparel in
thla way waa ordered for every member
of his family, the names and measure
ments of each person being given.
In addition to the general bill for these
purchases made by the agent the latter
waa required to forward receipted bills
from those persons of whom he bought
goods. In this way a check waa kept
upon the purchases made. In those daya
aa a planter Washington was hia own
bookkeeper, and the care with which his
books were kept is an example of the
thoroughness that made the man.
