The insurers argued that McKinsey worked with Purdue Pharma — the maker of OxyContin — to create and employ aggressive marketing and sales tactics to overcome doctors’ reservations about the highly addictive drugs. Insurers said that forced them to pay for prescription opioids rather than safer, non-addictive and lower-cost drugs, including over-the-counter pain medication. They also had to pay for the opioid addiction treatment that followed. From 1999 to 2021, nearly 280,000 people in the U.S. died from overdoses of prescription opioids, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Insurers argued that McKinsey worked with Purdue Pharma even after the extent of the opioid crisis was apparent. The settlement is the latest in a years-long effort to hold McKinsey account- able for its role in the opioid epidemic. In February 2021, the company agreed to pay nearly $600 million to U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories. In September, the company announced a separate, $230-million settlement agreement with school districts and local governments. A member of their 2023 Women’s World Cup squad, Sugita appeared in three matches at the tournament during the summer, including Japan’s quarterfinal match against Sweden. During the offseason, the NWSL added two expansion teams — Bay FC and the Utah Royals. The addition brings the total number of clubs in the league to 14. The NWSL season will kick off March 16. Each squad will compete in 26 regular season matches, 13 at home and 13 on the road. The 182-match regular season will be played over 25 weeks and the schedule will avoid staging NWSL matches during FIFA windows. Eight teams will qualify for the playoffs. The quarterfinal round will be held November 9 and 10, with the semifinals taking place November 16 and 17. The championship match is scheduled for November 23. Indonesia’s youth clean up trash from waterways Continued from page 20 Run date(s): Ad type (circle one): Continued from page 15 Security Code: there’s no good waste management system in the area. But since the clean-up efforts, children from nearby areas have started to visit and play by the river again, a rare sight in the big city, Rengganis said. Seeing children back at Ciliwung’s banks reminds him of his childhood, he said. “They feel comfortable and safe,” at the river, Rengganis said. “I hope, on other sides of Ciliwung — the upstream or the downstream areas — they can do the same thing.” Rengganis hopes the momentum to clean up the river and address the region’s trash problem con- tinues, so that future generations can also enjoy the area. Marhara believes that kind of lasting change will need a culture shift that will persist even if waste production is curtailed. “I am trying to counter the behavior that is causing trash to be out there in the environment,” he said, saying the country has a “littering culture.” “I think that the only way to counter that culture is by developing a counter- culture,” a clean-up cul- ture, he said.
