The original display broke new ground 15 years ago in exploring identity through portraits of multiracial subjects paired with handwritten responses to the typically posed question, “What are you?” In the new exhibit, participants’ updated portraits and statements are seen side-by-side with the older ones, showing not only their physical changes over 15 years, but also their changes in perspective and outlook on the world. The stark, plain format of the photographs remains the same, allowing viewers to focus on each subjects’ distinctive features. For info, or to purchase tickets, call (503) 224-1458 or visit . View “Bue Kee: An Artist’s Life and Legacy,” an exhibit that tells the unknown story of a Portland-born Chinese-American artist whose work — watercolors, paintings, lithographs, drawings, and ceramics — captures an intimate view of Portland Chinatown and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Bue Kee (1893-1985) was a painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Portland Chinatown who later moved with his family to Clackamas County to help manage a hops farm. Hard of hearing, he could read and write but did not finish grade school. In 1927, he and his family returned to Portland and Kee attended the Museum Art School. Through the following decades, the story illustrates the generational trauma and cultural aftershocks of incarceration, while highlighting the lingering sense of injustice and awakening to justice movements at home and abroad. Fast forward to 2001 and beyond, the display draws parallels between the stigmatization of Japanese Americans and modern-day anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, anti-Indigenous, anti-Black, and anti-immigrant policies.
