The company, founded by brothers Patrick and John Collison, is a competitor of Square, run by Twitter’s Jack Dorsey. After its latest round of funding, the company puts its value at around $36 billion, not too far behind GM, which is valued at $41.5 billion. Stripe is maintaining a $2 billion balance sheet, more fortress-like than besieged, as so many major companies have become during the COVID-19 crisis. Adding to Stripe’s client roster this year alone are the companies Caviar, Coupa, Just Eat, Mattel, NBC, and Paid. Stripe’s technology has become integral to thousands of small businesses through its broad platform. In April, the company said that it had facilitated $1 billion in sales for businesses that began using Stripe since COVID-19 was detected in the U.S. “I’m very excited to join Stripe at a pivotal time for the company,” Suryadevara said in a prepared statement. “I really enjoy leading complex, large-scale businesses and I hope to use my skills to help accelerate Stripe’s already steep growth trajectory.” General Motors named John Stapleton, GM North America chief financial officer, as acting global chief financial officer. With characteristic humility, Sato said after the race, “I know they wanted Graham to win so badly … I’m sorry for Graham I won today.” The victory was also a sort of redemption for Sato, who still felt the sting from his late-race stumble in the 2012 Indy 500. “I disappointed them,” Sato said. “I just wanted to fix it. It took eight years, [but] I just simply wanted to appreciate the team owners’ commitment.” Sato now joins a list of just 20 drivers who have won two Indy 500s, and he is only the second to get both wins in his 40s. “Age is just a number to me,” Sato said. “It’s Ganges River flows with history and prophecy for India Continued from page 2 After Varanasi, the Ganges continues its eastward journey through endless farmland as it nears the coast, eventually splitting off into ever-smaller rivers in the great wilderness of her delta. The biggest river, the Hooghly, heads south towards the sea, passing through Kolkata, the largest city in eastern India. Once the capital of the British raj, known as Calcutta, today the seething metropolis is home to nearly 15 million people. Eventually, its waters spill into the Bay of Bengal. Up near the Gangotri Glacier, a genial Hindu holy man who goes by the name Mouni Baba and spends much of his life in silent meditation sees all of mankind reflected in the river. “Human existence is like this ice,” he said. “It melts and becomes water and then merges into a stream. The stream goes into a tributary which flows into a river and then it all ends up in an ocean. Some (rivers) remain pure while others collect dirt along the way. Some (people) help mankind and some become the cause of its devastation.” TWO-TIME INDY 500 CHAMP.
