Hayao Miyazaki series featured during
April at Portland’s Hollywood Theatre

Portland’s Hollywood Theatre is
planning a special Hayao Miyazaki
celebration this month. Miyazaki is known
for his themes of pacifism and environ-
mentalism, as well as for stories featuring
strong female characters.
The series, which begins April 5 with
Princess Mononoke and ends April 28 and
29 with My Neighbor Totoro, includes
screenings of eight of Miyazaki’s best
films.
The highlighted cinematic pieces are:
Princess Mononoke
April 5, 7:30pm
Princess Mononoke tells the adult-
oriented tale of a classic battle of good and
evil as a young hero dives into a world of
violence in which he encounters gods,
spirits, demons, and other maladies in a
film that examines the conflict between
humans and nature. (1997, 134 minutes)
Spirited Away
April 6, 7:30pm & April 7, 4:00pm
The first foreign film to ever win a best
animated film Oscar, Spirited Away
focuses on a young girl who is whisked
away to a magical bath house, where gods
and other nonhuman beings come to
refresh, relax, and recharge. (2001, 125
minutes)
