Santaland items now
on display at OHS
Generations of Ore-
gonians
have
fond
memories of the downtown
Portland Meier & Frank
department store’s Santa-
land display. A ride on the
iconic monorail and a
chance to sit on Santa’s lap
became a Christmas tradi-
tion for many families.
Santaland, which was
modelled after holiday
themes popular in the
1940s and ’50s, featured a
vintage Christmas village
for decades.
Following the closure of
the Macy’s downtown store
(which purchased Meier &
Frank in 2005), some items
from
Santaland
were
donated to the Oregon
Historical Society (OHS)
and the Portland Business
Alliance.
During
this
holiday season, members of
the community are invited
to take a quick stroll down
memory
lane
while
admiring Santa’s throne,
Rudolph,
animatronic
elves, and a decorated
Christmas tree.
Santa Claus is also
visiting OHS on Saturday,
December 23 from noon to
4:00pm, so bring the kids
along.
