In the North Habitat section of the Ore- gon Zoo’s Elephant Lands area, a geothermal “slinky” system directs heat created as a byproduct of cooling the swimming pools for the polar bears through rows of slinky-like coiled pipes buried eight to 12 feet under- ground to warm the indoor portion of the elephant habitat. (Illustration by Glen Marcusen, courtesy of the Oregon Zoo) Elephant Lands earns LEED Gold certification Continued from page 11 now preheats water for ele- phant bathing and other uses. The warmed water, which is stored in a 1,500-gallon tank in the building’s mechanical room, reduces the amount of natural gas required to heat it. Natural ventilation Natural ventilation is now used in the indoor facility. Large louvers on the walls and roof open automatically based on outdoor temperatures, so about 75 percent of the building’s fan power is eliminated during natural- ventilation mode. Cross-laminated timber The Elephant Plaza building took runner-up honors for Sustainable Project of the Year in the Portland Business Jour- nal’s 2015 Better Bricks awards. One of the build- ings was the first commer- cial project in Oregon to use cross-laminated timber (CLT), a material made from planks of wood cross-hatched together into large structural sheets. Steel and concrete take a lot of energy to produce, and CLT — which stores carbon — can have a positive environmental impact over the life cycle of a building. The Oregon Zoo is recognized worldwide for its Asian elephant pro- gram, which has spanned more than 60 years. Considered highly en- dangered in their range countries, Asian elephants are threatened by habitat loss, conflict with humans, and disease. It is estimated that just 40,000 to 50,000 elephants remain in fragmented populations from India to Borneo. The Oregon Zoo is located at 4001 S.W. Canyon Road in Portland. The organization holds lectures and other events to spread its views and defends Japan’s wartime atrocities while accusing China and South Korea of lying or exaggerating their suffering. It also believes the U.S. postwar occupa- tion brainwashed Japa- nese with guilt and that education since the war was self-degrading.
