Asian Heritage Issue May 2, 2016 THE ASIAN REPORTER n Page 9 Celebrating Asian Heritage The Asian Reporter celebrates Asian Heritage Month with this special expanded issue and with our May 16 issue covering The Asian Reporter Foundation’s 18th Annual Scholarship & Awards Banquet. In this edition, we mark heritage month with a look at the Asian Health & Service Center (AHSC), which is working toward moving to a perma- nent home, a new 30,500-square-foot building in the Lents neighborhood. Founded in 1983, AHSC started in the 600-square-foot basement of a church, moved to a 3,000-square-foot facility in 1999, expanded within that building in 2002 to 9,000 square feet, and in 2008 moved to its current 12,000-square-foot home. The issue continues with “Beyond the Gate: A Tale of Portland’s Historic China- towns,” a display of rare and seldom- seen objects that tell a sprawling transnational story of contact and trade between China and the west, focusing on Portland’s Old China- town (1850-1905) and New China- town (1905-1950). The issue also highlights “Chinese American: Exclusion/Inclusion,” a travelling exhibit that chronicles the complex history of the Chinese in America, from the early days of China trade to the history of Chinese immigration and the life of Chinese Americans. Finally, our expanded events calen- dar provides a monthlong guide to Asian art, history, culture, and enter- tainment. Enjoy!
