Norman Huynh to join Oregon
Symphony as associate conductor
The Oregon Symphony has announced the selection of
Norman Huynh as its new Harold and Arlene Schnitzer
associate conductor. Huynh, who plans to make the move
from one Portland to another, is currently the assistant
conductor of the Portland Symphony Orchestra in
Portland, Maine, a position he has held for the past three
seasons.
Huynh made his international conducting debut with
the Princess Galyani Vadhana Youth Orchestra in
Bangkok and has since conducted symphonies in
Baltimore, Toledo, Charlotte, Virginia, and Macon, in
addition to the Peabody Symphony Orchestra.
Selected from a group of more than 50 applicants from
around the world, Huynh impressed Oregon Symphony
music director Carlos Kalmar with his musicality and
ability to communicate.
“Norman is a young conductor with great musical
potential,” Kalmar said. “He is versatile, clear in his ideas,
and very charismatic. I am happy that he will join our
Oregon Symphony family.”
When Huynh joins the symphony on August 1 of this
year, he will assume the duties of associate conductor,
which include working closely with the music director,
conducting school, kids, and special concerts, being
prepared to substitute for any conductor at a moment’s
notice, and participating in the day-to-day affairs of the
symphony, including education and community engage-
ment programs.
Upon learning of his selection, Huynh said he was
“honored to be chosen” and was “greatly looking forward
to working with maestro Kalmar, as well as the
phenomenal musicians and staff. Sharing my passion for
music with people of all ages throughout Portland and the
great state of Oregon is a privilege and one that I thank
the Oregon Symphony for giving to me.”
Huynh earned his master’s degree in orchestral
conducting at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins
University, where he studied with Marin Alsop, Gustav

Sho Dozono was born in Okayama, Japan, on March 4, 1944. In 1954, at 10 years
old, he and his family immigrated to America and settled in Portland. He attended
Cleveland High School and later earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of
Washington and a master’s degree from Portland State
University, both with a focus on education. After
teaching history for five years at Grant High School, he
joined Azumano Travel in 1976 and later became its
president and CEO in 1987. He married his wife, Loen,
in 1968. They have five children: Elisa, Kristen, Alison,
Stephanie, and Tadashi. A strong advocate for diver-
sity and equal opportunity, Dozono has used his role as
a business and civic leader to mobilize others in service
to the community. He has served as a board member,
president, vice president, chairman, commissioner,
and other positions for a number of organizations since
the mid-1970s. He inspired thousands to participate in “Flight for Freedom” and
“Flight of Friendship” events by organizing citizens to show support for
communities in the wake of tragedies such as September 11, the 2004 Indian
Ocean earthquake tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina. In response to the March 11,
2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, he helped raise more than $600,000 in
disaster relief. Sho has received numerous awards for community service and has
been recognized internationally for his civic work and devotion. He currently
enjoys golfing and spending time with his grandson and one-year-old grand-
daughter.
