“Counter-Couture”

Fashioning Identity in the American Counter-
culture,” an exhibit that captures the energy
and character of the 1960s and ’70s through the
era’s handmade fashion and style. The display
includes more than 100 works, including
clothing, jewelry, accessories, and ephemera of
American makers who crafted the very reality
they craved, on the margin of society but yet at

Islamic imagery, throw a dinner party for their
friends and colleagues, the conversation steers
into more complicated territory and difficult
truths are revealed which threaten to shatter

View “Zero Project,” a community-building
project by Japanese artist Katsushige
Nakahashi that transforms the gallery into a
working studio. Following Nakahashi’s detailed
instructions, members of the gallery community
are building the artist’s life-size sculpture of a
Mitsubishi A6M Zero warplane, the aircraft
flown by Imperial Japanese Navy kamikaze
pilots during World War II. The display also
includes a projection space for viewing related
films that explore Japan’s post-war history,
particularly 1960s science-fiction films that use
special effects, animation, and large-scale props
to envision fictional pasts and futures. For info,
