Sun-Ju Ahn wins playoff in
LPGA Tour’s Toto Japan Classic
SHIMA, Japan (AP) — Sun-Ju Ahn won the Toto Japan
Classic for her first Ladies Professional Golf Association
(LPGA) Tour victory and 20th Japan LPGA title, beating
fellow South Korean player Ji-Hee Lee and American
Angela Stanford with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff.
Ahn hit a 6-iron from 165 yards to five feet on the par-4
18th hole to set up the winning putt.
“I’m very happy,” Ahn said. “I didn’t think that I’d be
able to win the tournament, but it’s a nice surprise. I’m
very happy.”
Lee left a 50-footer short, and Stanford missed from 33
feet.
“About halfway I thought it might have a chance, but it
broke more than I thought it would,” Stanford explained.
“Sun-Ju hit a really good shot in there. If you stick it on 18,
with this hole, you deserve birdie and you deserve to win.”
The 28-year-old Ahn closed with a 5-under 67 at
Kintetsu Kashikojima to match Stanford and Lee at
16-under 200. Stanford also shot 67, and Lee had a 66.
Ahn has an option to take LPGA Tour membership next
season and is eligible for the season-ending CME Group
Tour Championship.

Korean-American goalkeeper Luis
Robles and the New York Red Bulls
have advanced to the Major League
Soccer (MLS) playoffs again. The Red
Bulls won the Supporters’ Shield —
awarded to the team with the best
overall record during the regular
season — for the second time in three
years, but this year the team wants to
also win the league championship.
Finishing atop the Eastern Confer-
ence with 60 points, the Red Bulls
were able to skip the opening one-
match knockout round of the MLS
Cup playoffs. During its two-game,
aggregate-goal conference semifinal,
the Red Bulls defeated D.C. United
twice, each time with a 1-0 score.
These wins set up a two-game,
aggregate-goal Eastern Conference
final between the Red Bulls and
Columbus Crew SC, which begins
Sunday, November 22 at 2:00pm.
The first match of the Western
Conference final, which kicks off
November 22 at 4:30pm, features the
Portland Timbers and FC Dallas. The
playoff path for the Timbers started
with a tense and emotional knockout-
round win over Sporting Kansas City
that featured 11 rounds of penalty
kicks following 120 minutes of
regulation and extra time that ended
in a 2-2 tie. Portland then defeated
MLS CUP. The Major League Soccer playoffs continue on Sunday, November 22, with the New
York Red Bulls playing Columbus Crew SC at 2:00pm, followed by the Portland Timbers and FC
Dallas at 4:30pm. Both matches are televised live. Pictured is New York goalkeeper Luis Robles

Monument will honor Hmong-Lao Vietnam veterans
WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — A new
monument is being built in Wausau
to honor Hmong-Lao Vietnam
veterans.
Dozens of people stood outside the
Marathon County Courthouse for the
groundbreaking. WAOW-TV reports
the bronze and granite statue is
expected to be finished by next May.
Hmong-American board president
Kham Yang says Hmong veterans
were known as the secret soldiers
because there were few who know
what they did for the United States
during the Vietnam War. They fought
surreptitiously for the CIA in Laos
and subsequently faced persecution.
Next year will mark the 40th
anniversary of the first Hmong
families arriving in Wausau, where
more than 7,000 Hmong now reside.
