SEASON THREE IN THE BOOKS. The National Women’s Soc-
cer League (NWSL) is expanding in 2016, with the Orlando Pride added
for next season. The NWSL will now feature 10 squads. Pictured is Rachel
Quon (#11) of the Chicago Red Stars. Quon logged more than 1,000
minutes during the 2015 season. (AR Photo/Jan Landis)

team, including stints with
clubs in Spain, Germany,
Australia,
and
New
Zealand. She is regarded as
being among the best
defenders in the world, and
her worldwide experience
will increase in the NWSL
offseason, as she is
currently on loan to AS
Elfen Saitama in Japan’s
L. League.
In Japan, Erceg will face
Portland’s
Meleana
“Mana” Shim, who is being
loaned by the Thorns to Iga
Kunoichi FC, also in the L.
League. Midfielder Shim, a
Hawai’i native, started 13
of her 18 matches with
Portland and proved to be
an essential part of the
Thorns offense. The well-
rounded Shim scored four
goals, second-best on the
team, and assisted on four
more, which tied her for the
team
lead
and
for
sixth-best in the NWSL.
These numbers show
how hard Shim has worked
to regain the starting spot
she lost last season. In
2014, she started just four
games and struggled to
impress new coach Paul
Riley. After a disap-
pointing sixth-place finish
in 2015, down from third
place in 2014, the Portland
Thorns hope to return to
the top of the league and
win a championship like
the club did during the
NWSL’s inaugural season.
Another Asian defender,
Caprice Dydasco from
Hawai’i, is also hoping to
play a more prominent part
for her team, the Washing-
ton Spirit. Dydasco, a
standout
on
UCLA’s
national
championship
team in 2013, has played
for the U.S. national
under-23 squad. The Spirit
acquired
Dydasco
in
January as the 19th overall
pick in the NWSL College
Draft, and she is on loan to
the Newcastle Jets of
Australia’s
Westfield
W-League this offseason to
get the seasoning she needs
to succeed in the NWSL.
The increasingly inter-
national outlook of the
league should help ensure
the success of the NWSL,
which is expanding to add
another team, the Orlando
Pride, for the 2016 season.
With more spots opening
up for talented players, ex-
pect to see even more play-
ers of Asian heritage show-
ing their skills in the bur-
geoning women’s league.
Editor’s note: On Monday,
November 2, the NWSL is
holding an expansion draft.
The new Orlando club is able to
select up to 10 players during the
process. To learn more, visit
