“Yosegaki Hinomaru:
Souvenir, Heirloom, or Art?”

of small Japanese flags inscribed with family
names at “Yosegaki Hinomaru: Souvenir, Heir-
loom, or Art?” The yosegaki hinomaru, or “good
luck flag,” is a national flag of Japan signed by
parents, friends, wives, and loved ones and
carried throughout Asia and the Pacific Theatre
by Japanese soldiers during World War II.
Taken as souvenirs from battlefields more than
70 years ago, families of U.S. veterans are now
discovering these artifacts in closets and attics
across America. In many cases, the personal
items are the only remaining trace in existence
of that person, who is still listed as “missing in
