Intercultural Organizing’s Pan-Immigrant Leadership and
Organizing Training (PILOT) Program, a nine-month leadership
workshop. The program addresses the challenges faced by
emerging immigrant and refugee leaders and groups through
strategic support, skill building, mentorship, and more.

“Educating for Peace”
Aug 1, 3-5pm, Concordia University, George R. White

for Peace: Poets Respond to the Nuclear Age 70 Years after
Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” a free event featuring area poets. For

MLK Dream Run
Aug 1-2, noon-9pm (Sat), 6am (Sun), Parking Lot (5125 NE
Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Portland). Join the MLK Dream
Run celebration weekend, which kicks off Saturday with
entertainment for the children — musicians, face painting,
magicians, water games, and dance performances — from noon to
4:00pm. From 4:00 to 6:00pm, activities ramp up for the tween to
young-adult crowd with upbeat entertainment. From 6:00 to
9:00pm, events include speeches, a tribute to Dr. King’s “I Have a
Dream” speech, dance performances, live music, food, and more.
All events on Saturday are free, but donations are accepted.
Sunday features 5K, 10K, and 15K races, with all runners
rewarded with a swag bag full of discounts and goodies, a free
raffle ticket, a complimentary grilled-cheese sandwich, and more.
Runners are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue displayed in

Historical Plaza anniversary
Aug 2, 4-5pm, Japanese American Historical Plaza (NW Naito

celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Japanese American
Historical Plaza and Bill of Rights Memorial, which stands as a
permanent memorial to the lives of Oregon Nikkei and their
determined pursuit of liberty, equality, and justice as American
citizens. The keynote speaker for the free event is renowned actor
and activist George Takei; music is provided by the Minidoka
Swing Band. Following the event is a celebratory cruise on the
Portland Spirit with special guest Takei and music provided by
Thomas Lauderdale of Pink Martini. Boarding for the dinner

commemoration of the anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima

Nikkei community picnic

munity picnic, scheduled for Sunday, August 16 from noon to
