38th Portland International Film Festival
brings world cinema to area screens
For the 38th year, the Northwest Film
Center is bringing cinema from around the
world to Portland with the Portland
International Film Festival (PIFF). The
festival, which takes place at several
venues from February 5 through 21,
includes 97 features and 60 shorts from
more than 50 countries.
One of the four films from Japan is
Mizuho Nishikubo’s Giovanni’s Island, an
animated story about the importance of
familial bonds and perseverance through
the greatest of hardships. The film, which
is for viewers age eight and older, is based
on true events.
Some of the other films screening during
the festival are Peter Ho-Sun Chan’s
Dearest, a film based on a true story about
the sensitivity, complexity, and indelible
pain of child abduction; Ann Hui’s
modernist biopic, The Golden Era, which
tells the epic tale of Manchurian essayist
and novelist Xiao Hong (1909-1941), one of
the most radical and controversial Chinese
female writers of the early 20th century;
Liar’s Dice, by Geetu Mohandas, an
atmospheric film that examines the
ominous undercurrents in contemporary
working-class India; and Daniel Ziv’s
Jalanan (Streetside), a film that plunges
viewers into the captivating story of three
gifted and charismatic street musicians
over a tumultuous five-year period in
Jakarta.

Cuts 6” takes place February 16 at 3:30pm.
