The RACC fellowship pro- gram is designed to help local artists of high merit sustain or enhance their creative process. The fellowship includes a cash award of $20,000. Menon founded the Anjali School of Dance in 1996 to impart the ancient art form of Bharatanatyam to stu- dents in the Portland area. She has adapted the art form for the next generation of dancers through innovation and experimentation with contemporary choreographic works such as Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Anita Menon. and the Wizard of Oz. Anita has choreographed dances using western classical music as well as pieces blending yoga and Bharatanatyam. She teaches “Story N Motion,” a program that combines the use of Bharatanatyam move- ments to convey stories, myths, and legends from around the world. She is also the founder of Mai3m, a nonprof- it organization dedicated to promot- ing Indian dance, music, and culture in a contemporary context through original choreographies, perfor- mances, and educational outreach. With the fellowship, Menon plans to set aside time for study, further experimentation, research, and reflection that will affect aspects of her choreography, both traditional and exploratory.
