“Uprooted: Japanese American Farm
Labor Camps During World War II”

Through Dec 12 (Mon-Sat), 10am-5pm, Four Rivers Cultural
Center (676 SW Fifth Ave, Ontario, Ore.). View “Uprooted:
Japanese American Farm Labor Camps During World War II,”
an exhibit about Japanese-American farm labor camps. On
February 19, 1942, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed
Executive Order 9066, which authorized the forced removal and
incarceration of more than 120,000 U.S. residents of Japanese
ancestry during World War II. Between 1942 and 1944,
approximately 33,000 individual contracts were issued for
seasonal farm labor, with many incarcerated Japanese
Americans working in the sugar beet industry. “Uprooted” tells
the story of the first such labor camp in Nyssa, Oregon, which, at
its peak, held 350 people. The display includes a selection of
images documenting the labor camps near Nyssa as well as the
towns of Rupert, Shelley, and Twin Falls, Idaho taken by Farm
Security Administration (FSA) photographer Russell Lee. For

Forum on racial impact statements

(900 Court St NE, Salem, Ore.). Join Oregon state senator Chip
Shields (District 22: N/NE Portland) for an informational forum
about addressing racial disparities in the 2015 legislative session
through the implementation of racial impact statements. The
Oregon State Legislature last passed racial impact statement
legislation in the 2013 legislative session. Racial impact state-
ments are a relatively new tool developed to estimate the impacts
of proposed child-welfare and criminal-sentencing legislation on
racial minority populations. The forum is open to the public. For

Sep 27, 10am-1pm, Oregon Coast and inland rivers. Join
fellow Oregonians for the annual SOLVE Beach & Riverside
Cleanup. The event marks the 30th anniversary of the first
volunteer, coast-wide beach cleanup in the world, which was held
in Oregon back in 1984. Volunteers are needed to clean Oregon’s
beaches and inland riversides from the Washington to the
California border. Participants are asked to check in at one of
more than 100 meeting sites and clean up the coastline and
riverbanks for wildlife and visitors. Sturdy shoes, weather-
appropriate clothing, a reusable container for drinking water, a
reusable bag or bucket for collecting trash, and gloves are

Multnomah County Library
150th anniversary celebration
Sep 27, 11am-5pm, Multnomah County Central Library (801
SW 10th Ave, Portland). In honor of its 150th anniversary, the
Multnomah County Library is hosting a free outdoor community
celebration featuring music, dance, tours, giveaways, library
programs for people of all ages, live entertainment, refreshments,
and more. The event also includes storytimes in Vietnamese,
Chinese, English, Spanish, and Russian beginning at 11:30am,
ecoroof tours starting at 10:30am, and a Symphony Storytime at
10:15am. On February 15, 1864, when Portland was a town with
muddy streets and wooden sidewalks, the Multnomah County
Library, the first free, tax-supported library in Oregon, was
formed. The oldest public library west of the Mississippi River,

Sunday Parkways: Southwest Portland
