Celebrating Asian Heritage
The Asian Reporter celebrates Asian Heritage
Month with this special expanded issue and with
our May 19 issue covering The Asian Reporter
Foundation’s 16th Annual Scholarship & Awards
Banquet. In this edition, we mark heritage month
with a look at To Be Takei, a new documentary
about actor and activist George Takei. The film
follows Takei’s life, including his childhood
experiences living in Japanese internment camps
during World War II, his success as Mr. Sulu on
the hit show “Star Trek,” and his current
activities and projects. The issue continues with a
story about never-before-seen photographs
currently on view in “Capturing a Generation
through the Eye of a Lens: The Photographs of
Frank C. Hirahara, 1948-54.” The collection of
images, donated to the Oregon Nikkei Endow-
ment by Patti Hirahara, provides a revealing
glimpse of the lives of Japanese Americans in
Portland after World War II. The history and
culture of Pacific Island culture is also explored in
a piece about Pacific Heartbeat, a series airing on
Oregon Public Broadcasting during the month of
May. Featuring rousing musical performances,
revealing exposés, and more, the series highlights
the heart and soul of the people and brings to light
contemporary issues. Finally, our expanded
events calendar provides a monthlong guide to
Asian art, history, culture, and entertainment.
