Arts Culture & Entertainment February 3, 2014 THE ASIAN REPORTER n Page 11 37th PIFF brings world cinema to Portland screens For the 37th year, the Northwest Film Center is bringing cinema from around the world to Portland with the Portland International Film Festival (PIFF). The festival, which takes place at several venues from February 6 to 22, includes blockbuster films, shorts, and other cinematic offerings from 44 countries. Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises, which is part of PIFF’s opening night, is an animated adaptation of the legendary filmmaker’s own serialized manga that brings to life Jiro Horikoshi, the visionary designer of one of history’s most beautiful airplanes — the prototype for the Zero World War II fighter. Some of the other films screening during the festival are Kim Mordaunt’s The Rocket, a heartwarming coming-of-age tale set in Laos; Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s Television, a film about a local community leader who bans every kind of image in his little village, including televisions and mobile phones; Rithy Panh’s The Missing Picture, which captures the filmmaker’s childhood recollections of the Cambodian genocide using hundreds of clay figures and dioramas; Vivian Qu’s feature debut, Trap Street, that plunges viewers into the fascinating world of state surveillance in China; and The Way We Dance, Adam Wong’s low-budget hit in Hong Kong about the hopes and dreams of youth. The following list gives moviegoers a quick glimpse of the Asian and Asia- themed films showing as part of the festival: Afghanistan Wajma (An Afghan Love Story): WORLD CINEMA.
