San Francisco newspaper, sent in by Shakespearean
festival publicists but singing the praises of southern
Oregon as a vacation spot, were gratifying and reveal

It was probably surprising to no one — the ap
proach that most of the first speakers at the Democrat

Someone once said th at you can’t beat Santa Claus
in a popularity contest, and that is about what the gen
eral election this autumn will be. As popular as General
Eisenhower is with the American people, even he may
have a hard time whipping the political facsimile of the
old gentleman with whiskers.
The value of the American dollar in 1952 aside for
the moment, one cannot deny that the Democrats in re
cent years have had more dollars circulating more rap
idly than any administration in history. And unfortun
ately, too many people, when they consider their econ
omic well-being, consider simply the number of dollars
that pass through their hands.
Not all of us are economists. When the Democrats
tell us that we are better off because we have more
money in our hands momentarily on pay day than we
had 20 years ago, then we accept that fact.
What most of us have, of course, is more in quan
tity, less in quality.
Few will deny the Democrats claim th at fewer
people are unemployed than in 1932; that more people
are eating better today than yesterday. What the Dem
ocrats cannot promise — and what too few of us ques
tion — is economic stability in the future. What we
have a difficult time becoming concerned about is din
ner tomorrow and day after tomorrow, as long as we
are eating well today.
Somehow, the Republicans must make the voters
of this country face the future. Somehow, the voters
must see that our inflationary spiral means economic
collapse eventually, if it is not checked.
In other words, we cannot fight the fight and win
with the present as our only concern. We must make
the future real to everyone.
A difficult task, certainly, but one th at must be
performed.
We must realize that our political Santa Claus, so
