“At a time when we are sup
posed to be doing our utmost to at
tract American visitors, it seems
singularly shortsighted del‘l’e*'at®:
ly to destroy a building which, if
its existence were better known,
would probably draw them to
Gravesend in large numbers,
wrote John Underwood in a letter
to The Times.
And in any case, Underwood
added. St. George's is worth pre
serving for its architectural merit.
Pocahontas, with her husband,
John Rolfe, and their son, was one
of the first American visitors to
England in the 17th Century.
Shortly after she and her hus
band had sailed on their ret“rn
voyage to Virginia in March, 1619,
Pocahontas became ill. She was
taken ashore at Gravesend, where
she died. She is commemorated in
St. George's by a tablet unye led
by Walter Hines Page, then United
