STRANGE ATTIRE AND HUMAN PERSONALITY—
“Dressing-up” is an ageless sport w h i c h affects
both young and old at times. And this has been one of
those times in Ashland. During the past week some of
its most dignified citizens have gone slightly berserk in
flaming shirts and stetsons.
I t’s law enforcement agents went all-out in their
regalia, authentic enough to make Roy Rogers look to
his laurels — especially if Chief Vern Smith should de
cide to take up a career in Hollywood. Desperadoes
lurked on every corner a n d customary Mr. Milque
toasts swaggered about the town with a devil-may-care
attitude quite startling to their acquaintances. Just
what their pioneer ancestors would have thought is a
question. The authenticity of levis and bandanas could
not be questioned but pedal-pushers and bare midriffs
caused many an elderly eyebrow* lifting. The very young
generation took occasion to save on soap rather than
add superfluous clothing.
It is amazing and amusing to behold the effect of
strange attire upon the human personality. It will be
interesting to note what influence the proposed Eliza-
bethean garb will have upon 20th century Ashlanders.

Decline Noted in Use of
W’inter Sports Areas
Winter sports areas in t h e
national forests of Oregon and
Washington attracted a total of
427,703 visitors the past winter,
according to figures compiled
by the U. S. forest service.
Every major area except one
showed a decrease in use and
t h e entire Pacific northwest
region showed a 20 per cent de
crease from the previous year.
The decrease in use was at
tributed to severe weather and
abnormal snowfall, the forest
service said.
