T h u rsd a y, Church I Announcements Ja n u a ry 12, 1950 P R E S B Y T E R IA N C H U R C H FOR JAN. IS Church Was Built On Conversion And Fellowship f J I ’ON the foundation of Jetw Christ the early Christian church was built by two things— conversion and fellowship. The first great In-gathering was on the Day of Pentecost, 90 days after the Passover, when Peter preached with such power and boldness thut many were moved to cry out In repentance, “What shall we do?“ About three thou sand were then converted and baptized. This company of be lievers wus soon increased, for we are told thut the Ixird added to the church daily such us were being saved (Acts 2:47). Hut someone has said that no one goes to heaven alone, and the first immediate manifestation of tills new life in conversion wus an Intense clinging of Christians to one another In a fellowship so deep and strong that at first they held all things in common. The real strength of the eai l> Christian church was in the way the individual Christians, with a new sense of the worth of their own souls, loved one another. It became a byword, murking them from the world In which they lived, "See how these Christians love one another." The Christian church today is a vast community of many churches, comprising many lunds, and mnny people of all sorts. It is an his toric institution, as well as a fel lowship of the sincerely devout and consecrated. People join the church from various motives, and many attend the services and sup port the church financially, whe hove never Joined it at all, or professed any vital experience oi conversion, such as transformed the early Christians. It is the continuing evidence ol «'hrlst’s presence and power, Un deepest, finest, strongest thing tn all the world. Would that there were more in that great company of sincere ChrlsUans! But let ur never forget how great It is, oi what that ChrisUan fellowship means to a world in need, more In need than it Is ever willing tc icknowledge F IR S T C H U R C H O F C H R IS T (C h ris tia n C h u rch ) Second and B Streets E a rl F.
