Southern Oregon New« Review Unemployment Up In November November established another ! seasonal peak in unemployment j * compensation for Oregon with payments of $1,933,327 — high est on record for any month In the last half of the year. This | brought the 1949 total of state benefits to $16,622,325, almost , up to the $16,669,748 all-time | high for the entire year of 1946 I With December payments ex I pected to pass two millions, the j | 1949 total may be close to $19 millions, according to the State j Unemployment Compensation1 Commission. Last month’s total was over J three times the November, 1948.1 figure and more than was paid ! out during the entire fourth ' quarter of 1946 or 1947. Last ) year November benefits of $535,- 365 more than doubled in Dec-I1 ember to reach $1,113,109. but officials do not expect the same rate of increase this year. The j j seasonal peak usually is reached in February or March. The Portland office accounted for $830,997 in November bene fits or about 43 per cent of the total, while the addition of the Oregon City and Hillsboro Dis- ! trict would bring the total to ] $930,388 or more than 48 per cent of the checks. Since th e, beginning of the year $7,817,- 040 has been distributed to un employed workers in the Metro politan area, including Multno mah, Columbia, Clackamas and Washington counties. Eugene and Lane county were I second in payments with $124,-1 397 for the month and $1,118,- 618 so far in 1949. Not far be-1 hind was Salem and the Marion- Polk county section with $112,- i 850 for November and $990,- 596 for the year to date. Local offices reported 28,342 claimants in the last week of | November as compared with 18,- 610 a year ago. Last year’s fig ure included many veterans' j claims, however, while only a i few hundred now are bing paid under the G-I Bill. November! allowances to former service i men were $56,486 against $229,- 567 las4 yeaf. Thursday.
