Farm Outlook For
Next Year Shows
Declining Income
What is the financial outlook
for farm ers next y e a r and be
yond? The answ er to th at ques-j
tion is of no sm all consequence
in Oregon, a g ric u ltu re being
Oregon’s greatest p r i m a r y )
source of cash income. R eceipts i
from farm m arketings averaged i
$375,000,000 a y ear from 19451
to 1949. Processing farm pro
ducts added m any m ore m illions
to the value of sales, p u ttin g '
money in circulation all through I
the state.
The answ ers to the outlook
question a re only m odertly fav
orable, according to a new c ir
cular ju st issued by th e Oregon |
extension service and available |
from county extension agents.
The rep o rt is based on inform at
ion released at the recen t natio
nal outlook conference as ad ap t
ed to Oregon conditions.
Prospects a re still better than
prewar, but less favorable than j
in 1948 and 1949, the rep o rt
shows. Increasing abundance ofi
farm products, .coupled’ w ith
moderate decrease in dem ands,
is being reflected in declining
prices received by farm ers,
Meanwhile prices paid by 1
farm ers for goods, service, and (
labor are com ing dow n v ery 11
slowly. Interest costs, taxes and I
insurance are higher. Thus, not |
only total farm receipts are fall
ing but the net incom e is sh rin k
ing also — and faster. T hat is
the general situation, although
some types of farm ing fare bet- j
ter than the average.
Farm products in general w ill
have more exchange value (buy
ing power) in 1950-51 th an th e I
ra th e r low p rew ar level, but |
considerable less th an in 1949
and 1948. C u rren tly th e ex- J
change value averages som e
w hat below p a rity calculated
under the new form ula. I t is
down about a fo u rth , com pared
w ith the peak in 1946.
The outlook fo r som e farm
products is associated w ith th e ]
provisions for calculating “ p a r-|
ity” and the price sup p o rt pro
visions contained in th e A gri
cultural Act of 1949. The circu
lar has a section to sum m arize
this. O ther sections deal w ith
supply, dem and, prices, costs,
and o th er outlook factors.
