Jewish Prophets
Realized Conflict
O f Good and Evil
rp H E prophets o f Israe l were both
x realists and idealists.
They were realists in the fact
that they liv e d intensely in th e ir
Im m ediate e nviro n m e nt and in
th e ir w o rld . They were sa in tly
men and women, b ut they were
hot h e rm it saints, w ho had w ith
d raw n from life . They perceived
clea rly the social inju stices and
oppressions, o f the strong against
the weak, and o f the u n ju s t against
the w o rth y and th e innocent.
T h e ir in d ic tm e n t was detailed
and specific, and they d id not hesi
tate to denounce e v il in high
places, as w e ll as in lo w . T h e ir
lo ya lty to th e ir God was above
th e ir lo y a lty to the state, o r its
king.
I t is th is realism th a t is the
m arvel o f the H eb re w prophecies
as i t is o f the B ib le as a whole.
B ut the prophets w ere idealists
as w e ll.
O ver against the e vil
that they saw in in d iv id u a ls and
in the nation, they p o rtraye d the
realities o f the good life , the
soundness o f personal righteous
ness and tru s t in God. Such tru s t
is revealed in the 46th Psalm
H ow much o f th is visio n and
ideal o f the prophets was re a l
ized? We know how Israe l fa ile d ,
and came dow n in disaster and
exile— the disaster th a t swept
away the N o rth e rn K in g d o m of
the Ten T ribes and the e x ile of
the people o f the S outhern K in g
dom. I t is a sto ry o f m o ra l d o w n
fa ll and judgm ent.
W hat we do not, perhaps, so
clearly apprehend is the n o n -re a l
ization o f the dream o f peace and
righteousness fo r the nations. P e r
haps the clearest and m ost d efin ite
expression of th a t dream o f peace
is in Isaiah 19:23-25.
But the fact that the goal is yet
unattained does not make i t less
great or desirable. N either does
it detract from the greatness and
glory of those prophets who in
times of violence never lost faith
in God. or hope fo r hum anity.
