Predators 'Competitors'
The “ Monthly N ew s F lash es" of
the Maryland g am e and Inland fish
com m ission , recom m ends s o m e
new definitions for predators and
su g g ests that they be called "com ­
petitors" instead. They are:
The Woods P u ssy —better known
as skunk—no m atter what his nam e,
he sm ells bad and acts w orse . . .
"Br'er F o x ” —the villian in the play;
•n o w s all the tricks in the bag,
and then som e; a true villian if
ever there w as one . , . The
“Cooper’s Hawk’’—A gangster with
feathers and claw s; a J esse J a m es
without a m ask . . . The “Great
Horned Owl”—an old devil with
horns, dangerous, sw ift and sure;
can be charged with a great num ­
ber of rabbits, squirrels and other
sm all g am e . . . The
“Bandit
Crow” —O fttim es called “the black
m en a ce ,” a m uch too polite nam e
for this tricky gan gster; you shoot
him down and think him dead, only
to se e him get up and flap aw ay
. . . If a cat h as nine liv es, the
crow has 29.

a giant Brow nie he killed on May
26, 1948, near Cold B ay.

first shot broke the an im al’s left
hip and h is second penetrated both
shoulders and killed the bear in­
stantly.

producer of the fam ous Woody
W oodpecker and other car­
toons, d isp lays three steelhead
w eighing from 8*4 to 10 pounds
which w ere c a u g h t on the
R ogue r ife r near G rants P a ss,
Oregon. The en tire catch w as
m ade on a No. IW R usselure
on a fiyrod.
As evidenced in
the photo, Lantz se em s to have
received som e help from Woody
W oodpecker.
Elusive 'M inn ie'
F ish erm en around Jam estow n,
N. Y ., are b eginning to despair of
ev er capturing “M innie M ethuse­
la h .” That’s the n am e of a m uskel-
lunge resid in g in Chautauqua Lake
w hich m easu res 42 inches long.
“ M innie" w as la st netted by
state conservation officers in 1945,
which w as w hen they learned her
dim ensions. She w as first netted ir.
1930 and a price w as put on her
head. She is tagged with the num ­
ber "230." P rizes offered by m er­
chants for “M innie” still stand.
