WENDELL LAWRENCE, Editor Entered as second-class mail matter in the post office at Ash land, Oregon, February 15, 1933, under the act of Congress of March 3. 1879 Commencement It s always a sad time tor the seniors of the high school and the col lege when spring and commencement come. It’s commencement for sure. To some of the students it means merely the ending of high school and a three month vacation before college begins. To the majority ir means the end of school and the commencement of work. To all it means a greater responsibility, a flight with their own wings. Jefferson I t ’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about the fine state of Jefferson. W hat has happened, we wonder, to all those political pion eers who were out to carve out a new state, a 49th commonwealth, from Southern Oregon and Northern California. Sometimes we think they were on the right track, and we almost re gret that they didn't get the job done. Just think of the fun that would have taken place when all the communities in this proposed state re gion started slugging it out for the honor of being the state Capitol. School Elections A small number of voters turned out Tuesday for the school budget election. These days this is to be expected. Some day, however, some quietly operating anti-school expansion group will swarm to the polls at the time of the annual school budget election and cut the school ap propriation to zero. It can happen here, and it would be a sad dav in deed. Six Per Cent Limitation • That the growth of the city of Ashland has caused a drain on the city’s financial resources goes without saying. The addition of the Bellview area has brought the community more land and more people but not more money. Under the state laws of Oregon a municipality cannot in any one year exceed by more than I six per cent the previous year’s budget. This City of Ashland, like! many other Oregon cities has found that the high cost of operating a ' municipality has increased faster each year during the inflation than a mere six pier cent. If this community is to have good roads, good water, good sewer systems, a first class police and fire department, one of these days it will be necessary for the people to go to the polls and vote the city fathers an OK to exceed the six per cent raise over last year’s budget. That particular election isn’t too many years away. «vrg a rt a MfJkf on *•< •* *. • J’ots ¿wttfriran Chftxr« fright) th-t fin I,Kit*.’««!u Oak INSURANCE Ashland Hotel Building rfoB* w— a Mac’s Shoe Shop w. c.
