HlSTORl CHE TOWN
Jacksonville is one of the olflend most historical cities In the
State of Oregon. Establishedlnl when gold was found in large
quantities in the nearby hllN Jonville was a thriving commun
ity long before other section regon were settled.
The discovery of gold broKlners into the Jacksonville area
by the hundreds, to some «n am e almost overnight, and to
some of these it left as qulilu gamblers and gaming houses
were established on the heeh te discovery. The metropolis of
Southern Oregon was a coi^nl hub for an extensive trading
ar«‘a and a headquarters forgoes against the warring Indians
who resented the encroachn^nsettlers upon their hitherto un
molested lands.
While the passing years haven with them the stirring events
of Pioneers and gold rush dtyksonville has grown in interest
for visitors.
THE MUSEUM
Open daily except Monday, the Jacksonville Museum is one o f th<
spots in Jacksonville which every visitor should see. The entire
story of old Jacksonville is to be found in the relics which are kept
there. One of the major items of interest is the old hand drawn
pumper which was used by the Jacksonville Volunteer Fire depart
ment in the early days of the settlement.
THE CHURCH
....The Protestant church in Jacksonville is the oldest Protestant
church west of the Rockies. Eighty-three years ago the church was
dedicated by five Protestant organizations represented in the com
munity. The chief donors to the fund for the church were;» group
of gamblers who gave the house returns on a faro game to the
church’s solicitor.
FISHING AND HUNTING
Jacksonville lies in the center of one of the finest fishing regions
in the world. The famous Rogue River is but a few miles from the
city and here the angler can fish for salmon and trout at his
pleasure. The Big and Little Applegate rivers have long been
known for their fine trout fishing. Elliott creek and Middle Fork
of the Big Applegate are favorite spots for local fishermen who
know where the big ones can be found.
Hunting in the fall is a pastime which every citizen of Jackson
ville enjoys. Deer come down to the town and the fields and or
chards about are favorite spots for pheasants and quail.
