Stressing that the old permit
with serial numbers beginning
with “5R” have been expiring in
consecutive blocks since June,
1947, regardless of the date print
ed on the license, the secretary
warned that state and local po
lice are citing many drivers who
failed to renew on schedule.
As a result of intensified police
checks a flood of current and de
layed “5R” renewals Is pouring
into the license department,
jumping from 17,676 in February
to 30,438 In March. They are re
placed with new permits which
expire according to the holder’s
birth date.
Pointing out that an expired li
cense is the same as no license at
all, Newbry urged all holders of
“5R” permits to file renewal ap
plications immediately. Fee sched
ules may be obtained from the
sheriff or police department, or
from any driver’s license exam
iner.

2. If you could see how much expensive equip
ment goes to work for you each time you make a
call, you might wonder how it can be done . . . for
just a few dollars a month. Lines, cables, poles,
buildings, intricate equipment— all must be ready
. . . along with the people who man them . . . to
serve you when you pick up your telephone.

1 . For a quick call to th e d ru g g is t, for busi
ness, for every purpose, your telephone is a more
valuable servant today than ever. It can run more
errands, do more jobs. In the past ten years, tele
phones on the Coast have doubled. W e’re continu-
■ng to add them rapidly. Result; You can get in
touch with more people. More people can get in
?uch with vou.
3 . M oro “ Voices w ith a Sm ile” are serving
the West today . . . our payroll is the biggest ever.
Postwar costs have shot up all along the line on
the things we do to provide sen ice. The facilities
to serve new telephones today cost about twice as
much as prewar. Yet telephone rates are up much
less than almost anything we buy or you buy.
4. There is no w a y to deter
mine the full value of a tele-
hone, o f course. A call may
e routine— or it may save a
life, make a new friend, close
a business deal. Yet a few pen
nies still buy a telephone call.
In these days of high prices,
it’s good to know that your
telephone keeps giving you
real value— it’s one of today’s
biggest bargains.
