Elks Spend Four Thousand Dollars
On Youth Activities During 1948
Retiring exulted Ruler Roland
Harks, of Benevolent and Protec­
tive O rder of Elks, No. 944 this
week reported on the youth ac­
tivities work which had been
done during the past year by the
lodge
More than $4000.00 has been
spent by the Elks on various
youth activity projects which in­
clude: 1. The aw ard of four 4-H
scholarships at Oregon state col­
lege to four Ashland youngsters.
2. The purchase of two 4-H hogs
and two 4-H beef at $277.80 a-
bove the m arket price. 3. Spon­
soring a Senior Scout troop
4. Made a contribution of $750.00
to the Community Chest o f Ash
land.
3 Purchased new m ujorette un­
iforms for the Ashland high
school majorettes.
6. Purchased Reader's Digest
Films on The American Heri­
tage* which have been given to
the schools under the lodge's ju r ­
isdiction.
Sponsoring an essay contest on
the subject "Why Democracy
Works ", Peggy Taylor of Ash­
land high school won the $35.00
first prize.
8. Sponsored a Junior Bowling
League.
Donated lounge for mid-sum-
m«r Teen age dance sponsored
by the Ashland Recreation Com­
mittee.
10. Sponsored the annual "Most
Vuluable S tudent Contest Schol
aralilps to SOC given as prizes.

and Edith Sutcliffe were adjudg­
ed winners.

to Veterans hospital in Roseburg
12. Purchased tre a t for 1200
Ashland children at annual out­
door Christm as tree and program
13. Purchased some 4000 lun
ches for needy children in ihe
Ashland and nearby area

need of each child was present­
ed by the school principal and
passed on by the welfare com­
mittee.
14. Sponsored a football ban
quet for the Southern Oregon
college, Ashland High, Ashland
Jumui High, and Talent High
football squads.
15. Donated a trophy to the
Southern Oregon B. School tour­
nam ent.

of water. W here brown rot has
been severe, repeat in the full
bloom.
Add 3 lbs ut Cryolite or l*/a
lbs. 30 per cent DDT lor control

Apricots should be sprayed in
