•beheaded. The 14th of February
is observed generally as a tim e

no connection between the cele­
bration and the story of V a le n ­
tine can be traced.
Instead, i t is thought that the
popular observance of the Saint
Valentines Day may be a s u rv i­
val of the ancient Roman fe stival
of Lupercalis, at w hich the names
of young wom en were placed In a
box. w h ile the young men drew
them out according
to chance.
