• Leaders of unions representing rail
road engineers and firemen seek fo force
railroads Io add extra, needless men on
diesel locomotives. This is sheer waste
—a “ make-work" program which would
mean fewer improvements and higher
costs— for YOE!
R ailroads use modern diesel locomotives be
cause they are one of the means ot giving
faster, b e tte r service to you.
Tw o men compose I he crew of a diesel.
T hey occupy a clean, com fortable cab at the
front, 'file engineer handles the throttle. T h e
fireman sits and w atches th e track ahead.
W ith no coal to shovel, he has practically
not Iti ng else to do.
No Benefit To You
Now the leaders of the Brot herhood of Loco
m otive Engineers and the B rotherhood of
Locomotive Firem en and Knginemen w ant
to use th e diesel locomotive as a m eans of
forcing a feather-bedding scheme on the rail
roads. T he extra men they propose to add to
the diesel crews are not needed. T here is no
work for them .
T he union lenders are fighting among them
selves about which union should furnish
these extra.needless men. T he B rotherhood of
Locom otive Engineers have even threatened
»strike. You may not be interestixl in this dis
p ute of these two unions, h u t you would be
vitally concerned if these groups succeed in
putting through this feather-bedding scheme,
because it would mean a slowing up of the
im provem ent program of the railroads—of
which the diesel is the outstanding symbol.
Diesel crews are among the highest paid

freight cars, as well as on diesel locomotives,
and on the m any o th er less conspicuous de
tails of railroading th a t contribute to im

We’d Like To Spend This Money On You
B ut brazen feather-bedding schemes like the
one now proposed would, if successful, divert
large.sum s of money from our present im
provem ent programs. E ven worse, they make
im provem ents like the diesel worthless, by
making the cost of their operation prohibitive.
These dem ands are against YOliR interests
—as well as those of th e railroads. T hey are
schemes to ''m ak e w ork” . N either you nor
th e railroads should be forced to pay such a
penalty for progress.
T h a t's why th e railroads are resisting these
"m ake work" dem ands to the last d itch —and
why they are telling you about them.
You know how much t he diesel has m eant to
you in intreased s p e e d , com fort and conven
ience. T h e railroads have many more of them
on order for even greater im provem ent in
service to you. Bui needless drains of money,
such ns this pres«, n t dem and of t he unions for
needless men on diesels, reduce th e ability of
the railroads to spend m mey on b etter serv
ice for you.
Proud as the railroads are of the diesel, it. is
only a small part of their im provem ent pro
gram. Since the War. literally billions of dol
lars have been spent on im provem ent of
